Sharks Fall to WPI, 3-1

BOSTON, Mass. -- Simmons Volleyball opened their 2013 season today at the Wheaton Invitational tournament. 

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Simmons Volleyball fell to Colby College, 3-0 and Bates College, 3-2 on the final day of the MIT Invitational Saturday afternoon. Simmons (0-12) fought back to force a fifth game versus Bates but were unable to hold on for the win.

BOSTON, Mass. -- Simmons Volleyball extended their win streak to three with sweeps over the Lasell College Lasers, 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-17) and the Albertus Magnus Falcons, 3-0 (25-13, 25-14, 25-14) in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action Friday evening at the Holmes Sports Center.

BOSTON, Mass. – Simmons Volleyball fell to the WPI Engineers, 3-1 (25-23, 15-25, 25-18, 25-21) in non-conference action Tuesday night at the Holmes Sports Center. The Sharks fall to 4-16 overall while the WPI improves to 6-9 with the win.

 

Simmons senior Rossi Fish (North Attleboro, Mass.) lead all Sharks with a season-high 14 kills for a .355 hitting percentage. Sophomore Nicole Alberghini (Northborough, Mass.) continued to dominate on offense, hitting .393 with 13 kills and just two errors on 28 attempts. WPI had a standout day, with four Engineers registering ten more kills. Maddy Werth posted 15 kills and Kenzie Whalen added 14, while Sarah Cook and Holly Ganser added 10 kills apiece.

 

The Sharks continued to pressure offensively but WPI's defense was solid, anchored by Cassandra Tomerlin (26 digs), Cook (15 digs) and Caroline Meyer (10 digs). The Sharks kept the ball in play off stellar defensive performances by Andalyn Duke (17 dig), Kat Guillotte (16 digs) and Alexandria Itasaka (14 digs). Duke posted a season high 34 assists, while the Engineers Meyer recorded 41. But WPI capitalized on the Sharks errors to secure the win.

 

Simmons returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 5 at MIT for a trimatch with Bowdoin College beginning at 11:00 AM. WPI travels to the Johnson & Wales Invitational on Friday, Oct. 4.
