Sharks Sweep in Tri-Match Action with Norwich and Suffolk

NORTHFIELD, Vt.?The Simmons Sharks finished 2-0 in volleyball action in Saturday?s tri-match hosted at Norwich University. The Norwich Cadets finished 1-1 on the afternoon, while the Rams of Suffolk University went 0-2 in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference action.

NORTHFIELD, Vt.—The Simmons Sharks finished 2-0 in volleyball action in Saturday's tri-match hosted at Norwich University. The Norwich Cadets finished 1-1 on the afternoon, while the Rams of Suffolk University went 0-2 in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference action.

In the opener between Suffolk and Norwich, the Cadets used a team total of 29 kills to post the 25-22, 25-12, 25-18 win. Tara Lyons (Pocassett, Mass.) led the Cadets with eight kills and 11 digs. Alex Palmer (South Windsor, Conn.) totaled a match-high 12 digs for Norwich, while Gabrielle Miller (Grove City, Ohio) dished out a match-high 18 assists.

The Rams were led by Tori Brillaud (North Andover, Mass.) with 10 kills, nine digs and a match-best .320 attack percentage. Sarah Arbogast (Chesterfield, Mo.) added seven kills for the Rams, while Glamarys Sierra (Carolina, Puerto Rico) dished out 15 assists.

The Cadets totaled a .233 attack percentage in their opening match, while Suffolk finished the match with a .208 attack percentage.

In the second game of the day, Simmons used the offensive power of Caroline Boyd (Hampden, Conn.) and Raeann Nesta (Niantic, Conn.) to take the 25-13, 25-19, 25-12 win. Boyd and Nesta both had 10 kills apiece, while Kelly Last (West Haven, Conn.) added five. Brillaud totaled seven digs in the loss for the Rams.

In the nightcap, Simmons took a 3-0 win against Norwich with scores of 25-14, 25-15, and 25-20. The Sharks were led offensively again by Nesta, who totaled nine kills for a total of 19 kills on the day. Rachel Dufault (Westport, Mass.) dished out a match-high 27 assists for Simmons, while Chanel Thomas (Phoenix, Ariz.) posted a 10 digs.

The Cadets were led by Lyons with six kills on .263 hitting, followed by Miller with five kills. Miller also dished out 14 assists for the Cadets, and Palmer led the defensive effort with 10 digs. Haley Vermes (Westborough, Mass.) totaled two solo blocks for Norwich and also added seven digs.

Simmons was powered by 31.5 percent hitting, while limiting Norwich to 18.8 percent hitting.

The Sharks returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Anna Maria at 7:00 p.m.
