Sharks Defeat Maine Maritime 3-1 at Colby Invitational

WATERVILLE, Maine -- Simmons took a 3-1 win against Maine Maritime Academy (1-2) in the second match of the Colby College Invitational Friday evening. Simmons (3-3) won 25-18, 25-12, 24-26, 25-18 led by freshman Raeann Nesta (Niantic, Conn.) who posted 15 kills and hit .333 over the four sets.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. ? In its first home matches of the 2012 season, the MIT women?s volleyball team defeated NEWMAC rival Smith College (25-17, 25-18, 25-11) and local foe Simmons College (25-15, 25-19, 25-12) on Saturday afternoon. Earlier on, Simmons battled Smith for a 26-28, 25-15, 25-18, 19-25, 15-13 victory.

The Sharks went on the attack early and never looked back as senior Kelly Last (West Haven, Conn.) and freshman Brittany Hill (Milford, Mass.) beat the Maine Maritime Academy Mariners defense with 11 and seven kills, respectively.

Senior setter Rachel Dufault (Westport, Mass.) surpassed the 1,500-career assist mark with a season high of 40 during the match.

The Sharks return to action on Saturday when they face host Colby College at 10:00 a.m. and the University of Maine at Farmington at 12:00 p.m.
