Simmons Hands Worcester State, 3-1, Setback

WORCESTER, Mass. ? Simmons senior Meaghan Flynn (Laguna Beach, Calif.) recorded team-high totals of nine kills, 33 digs and three service aces to help lead the Sharks to a 3-1 triumph over Worcester State in non-conference women?s volleyball action this evening at the Lancer Gymnasium.

NEWTON, Mass. ? The Sharks defeated Mount Ida College Mustangs 3-2 in their opening matching at a Great Northeast Athletic Conference tri-match on Saturday afternoon. Meaghan Flynn (Laguna Beach, Calif.) lead the sharks with 16 kills and 24 digs. Junior Rachel Dufault (Westport, Mass.) added 35 assists and 19 digs, while Kelly Last (West Haven, Conn.) was a force on defense with 26 digs.

Simmons Volleyball is ranked #4 as the Great Northeast Athletic Conference announced the Playoff schedule today. The Sharks, who finished the regular season with a conference record of 9-4 and an overall record of 19-9 will host #5 Norwich University (8-5, 16-9), on Tuesday, November 1st at 7:00 p.m.

Simmons runs their streak to three straight for an overall record of 14-4 with the win while the Lancers slip to 7-10 on the season. In what proved to be a thrilling match-up between the two squads, WSU would take the first set 25-22 before the Sharks rattled off three straight, 25-20, 25-21, and 25-14, for the victory.

Junior Kelly Last (W. Haven, Conn.) and sophomore Rossi Fish (N. Attleboro, Mass.) both finished with seven kills for the visitors as Fish tallied 25 digs. Sophomore Sandy Lor (Fitchburg, Mass.) added 27 digs while third-year Caroline Boyd (Wilbraham, Mass.) distinguished herself with five of the squads eight solo blocks.

The Lancers were paced by junior Becky Lebel's (Millbury, Mass.) totals of nine kills and seven digs. Freshman Alyssa Jasper (Rockland, Mass.) ended the night with 10 kills and one ace as sophomore Vicki O'Brien (Canton, Mass.) notched 14 digs. Senior Joanne Grenier (Orange, Mass.) recorded her fifth double-double of the season by handing out 28 assists and putting up 10 digs.

Worcester State will play in the Crabtree Classic this weekend hosted by Eastern Connecticut and they will take on the hosts in the opening round at 4 p.m.

Simmons heads to Regis on Friday for a 7 o'clock matchup before they return to GNAC play with Emerson the following Thursday at 6:00 p.m.
