Sharks Tripped Up By Saints

BOSTON, Mass. ? Simmons Volleyball won the first game but were tripped up by crosstown rival Emmanuel College Saints 4-1 (20-25, 25-16, 25-18, 25-20), in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action Tuesday night. With the win, the Saints move to 15-13 overall and 7-2 in the GNAC while the Sharks fall to 15-6 overall and 6-2 in conference play.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Meaghan Flynn (Laguna Beach, Calif.) was selected as one of New England?s top 33 Division III senior volleyball players announced by the New England Women?s Volleyball Association (NEWVA) Tuesday afternoon. Flynn will compete in the 2011 NEWVA Senior Classic on December 4th, at the University of Massachusetts-Boston.

The Sharks opened with strong play by senior Meaghan Flynn (Laguna Beach, Calif.) who had 13 kills for a 0.297 hitting percentage and 13 digs. Junior Kelly Last (West Haven, Conn.) was dominated the court, drilling five kills past the Saints defense and adding 14 digs to give the Sharks the lead. Sophomore Sandy Lor (Fitchburg, Mass.) posted 13 digs to carry the Sharks defense along with Rossi Fish (North Attleboro, Mass.) who blocked well for the Sharks.

The Saints stepped up their play in the second game and were relentless for the next three. Senior Rebecca Stanton (Quincy, Mass.) lead all Saints with 16 kills while junior Yun-Ting Lee (Cambridge, Mass.) was stellar on defense with 21 digs.

In the final game of the evening, Saints senior outside hitter Jenna Ross broke the Emmanuel College record in digs, surpassing 1,431 to become the new school record holder.

The Sharks return to action Thursday when they travel to Colby-Sawyer College for a 7:00 p.m. game. The Saints travel to Eastern Nazarene on the same date for a 7:00 p.m. game.
