Colby-Sawyer Sweeps Simmons, 3-0

NEW HAVEN, Conn. ? The Simmons Sharks remained undefeated in conference play Saturday as they swept GNAC conference rivals Albertus Magnus and Anna Maria in women?s volleyball action at the Albertus Magnus Tri-Match. The Sharks posted a 3-0 (25-17, 25-15, 25-18) decision in the win against the Falcons and a 3-0 (25-21, 25-8, 25-22) against the AMCATS to move to 11-2 overall.

Colby-Sawyer, who donned pink jerseys in support of the cure for breast cancer, evens its record to 14-14, while Simmons drops to 16-7.

Colby-Sawyer, who donned pink jerseys in support of the cure for breast cancer, evens its record to 14-14, while Simmons drops to 16-7.

Colby-Sawyer was led by sophomore Courtney O'Hara (Mystic, Conn.). She tallied 14 kills and eight digs. Freshman Jackie Keating (Marshfield, Mass.) and sophomore Emilee McBride (Strafford, N.H.) each collected eight kills. Sophomore Ally Le-Bruno (Medfield, Mass) recorded a match best 20 digs. Senior Kristin Sawyer (Walpole, Mass.) had a match-high 34 assists and added seven digs.

Senior Meaghan Flynn (Laguna Beach, Calif.) led the Sharks with a match-high 19 kills on .385 hitting. She added a team-high 14 digs for the double-double. Junior Rachel Dufault (Westport, Mass.) also registered a double-double with 29 assists and 10 digs. Junior Kelly Last (West Haven, Conn.) tallied six kills and eight digs.

The match featured long runs by both teams and included 19 ties and 11 lead changes.

The first set began with a 9-1 run by Simmons, but Colby-Sawyer responded with 12-4 run to tie the score at 13-13. The teams traded points over the next several plays before the Chargers pulled away with 9-2 run to end the first set at 25-18.

The second set was close throughout and either team trailed by at most four points. Colby-Sawyer was able to hold off the Sharks with a couple of kills at the end of the set.

The third set featured nine ties and seven lead changes. The Chargers were comfortably ahead 17-12, but after a timeout by Simmons the Sharks responded with an 8-2 spurt to take a 20-19 lead. Simmons had two set points, but each time the Chargers were able to tie the score and eventually got two consecutive points to secure the 27-25 set three win.

The Chargers will travel to Castleton for a tri-match with Green Mountain on Saturday. Simmons also will participate in a tri-match on Saturday. The Sharks play at Mount Ida with Rivier.
