Mountaineers Top Sharks 3-0 in Volleyball

BOSTON, Mass. ? Simmons Volleyball was defeated by the Southern Vermont Mountaineers 3-0 Thursday evening at Simmons College in non-conference play. SVC improved to 17-2 with the victory over while the Sharks fell to 11-4 overall. The Mountaineers won by scores of 25-17, 25-20, and 25-14. Mountaineer?s senior captain Hershey Canta recorded 28 assists in the game including her 1000th in her career.

Mountaineer's senior captain Hershey Canta recorded 28 assists in the game including her 1000th in her career.

The Sharks offense was led by senior Meaghan Flynn (Laguna Beach, Calif.) who had six kills and sophomore Megan Chamberlin (Milford, Mass.) who posted four kills. Simmons defense was strong and composed, with sophomore Sandy Lor (Fitchburg, Mass.) recording 15 digs and Flynn and Chamberlin each adding 10 more.

The Mountaineers were led by NECC Player of the Week, Jessica Alvarez, who had 14 kills for the Mountaineers on 22 attempts. Junior middle Danielle Healis hit for a .522 hitting percentage connecting on 13 kills in 23 attempts. The feisty defense had 57 digs and four players with double digit digs. The Mountaineers held Simmons to 13 kills in the match.

Simmons hosts GNAC conference rivals Saint Joseph's College (Maine) and Lasell on Saturday for a Tri-match at 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Southern Vermont will start New England Collegiate Conference play Tuesday night at Becker College.
