Sharks Fall to WPI in Season Opener, 3-0

Simmons Volleyball fell in three straight sets to WPI on Wednesday night in the Sharks? season opener. Junior Meaghan Flynn (Laguna Beach, Calif.) led the way for Simmons, narrowly missing a double-double with 10 kills and nine digs. The Engineers won the match by scores of 25-22, 25-13, 25-22. With the loss, Simmons stands at 0-1 overall (0-0 GNAC), while WPI advances to 1-0 overall.

Sophomore setter Rachel Dufault (Westport, Mass.) paced all players with 20 assists on the night to go along with a pair of aces.

The first set of the match was a close one with neither team ahead by more than three points. WPI's Elyssa Dorenfeld served four straight points late in the set to put the hosts ahead for good.

The third set patterned the first with neither team leading by more than three points. WPI sealed the victory when Belinda Nwagbara collected her 10th kill of the evening.

Nwagbara led WPI with 10 kills and four digs. Sophomore libero Jocelyn Close and classmate Lauren D'Angelo helped the WPI cause with eight digs each, while setters Kim Woodward and Alex Rangel combined for 20 assists.

Simmons returns to the court on Friday, September 3, when they host North Central (IL) in their home opener at 3:00pm. WPI will return to action this weekend as they compete at the Regis Tournament.
