Volleyball Drops Two to Monks and Colonials

Game One

The Monks jumped out to a 2-0 lead with 25-22 victories in each of the first two sets, however the Sharks we're able to fight back with a pair of hard-fought wins to force a fifth set. Simmons found themselves trailing 12-10 in the fifth set, however, with some stellar defense the Sharks were able to bounce back and take a 14-12 lead. Trailing 14-12 in the final set, the Monks registered four unanswered points to secure a 16-14 win and a 3-2 victory.

For the Sharks, Meaghan Flynn (Laguna Beach, Calif.) belted a match-high 19 kills with 12 digs and four aces, while Taylor Pederson (San Antonio, Texas) boasted 12 kills in the losing effort. Rachel Dufault (Westport, Mass.) dealt 37 assists and posted 15 digs and Kate Fionte (Andover, Mass.) contributed 10 digs and nine kills for Simmons.

Game Two

Western Connecticut State cruised to a victory in three straight sets over Simmons (25-10, 25-8, 25-21). The Sharks stumbled in the opening set, resulting in a 25-10 loss. However, Simmons was able to make the third set an interesting back-and-forth battle. With some stellar defense from freshman Sandy Lor (Fitchburg, Mass.) and some huge blocks by freshman Megan Chamberlin (Milford, Mass.), the Sharks found themselves battling throughout the third set. Several untimely errors handed Simmons the 3-0 loss.

The Sharks will regroup and return to action on Thursday, September 30 when they host GNAC opponent Suffolk at 7:00pm.
