Volleyball Competes at Ramapo Classic

Simmons Volleyball traveled to the 2009 Ramapo Roadrunner Classic in Mahwah, N.J. on Saturday to take on three non-conference teams. The Sharks fell to Baruch College (3-1), Ramapo (3-0), and USMMA (3-1). The Sharks now stand at 6-9 overall, 1-0 in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference.

Simmons Volleyball traveled to the 2009 Ramapo Roadrunner Classic in Mahwah, N.J. on Saturday to take on three non-conference teams. The Sharks fell to Baruch College (3-1), Ramapo (3-0), and USMMA (3-1). The Sharks now stand at 6-9 overall, 1-0 in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference.

"This was one of the last of our non conference games, and we learned a lot about ourselves as individuals as well as a team," said Head Coach Jason Conetta. "There were a lot of strong performance from numerous players this weekend, however we were missing pieces of the puzzle in key situations."

Match 1

Simmons fell to Baruch, 3-1 in the first match of the day (25-19, 25-20, 19-25, 25-13). Sophomore Meaghan Flynn (Laguna Beach, Calif.) recorded a match high 14 kills and adding 12 digs. Freshman Kelly Last (West Haven, Conn.) posted 13 digs, three kills and one block while senior Amanda Weaver (Eaton, OH) tallied 28 assists and five digs. In the first three sets, the Sharks built leads, but broke their momentum, eventually falling to the Bearcats. Baruch was led by senior Mayra Estepan (Forest Hills, N.Y.) with nine kills, three assists and nine digs, while sophomore Laura Hayden (Parker, Colo.) collected five kills. Rookie setter Melinda Santiago (East Patchogue, N.Y.) posted 35 assists, three service aces and seven digs in the match while sophomore Posey Wilson (Fayetteville, AK) had a team-high 15 digs and four service aces.

Match 2

The Sharks were defeated by Ramapo, 3-0 (25-17, 25-20, 25-11) in match two. Simmons was led by Flynn, who tallied seven kills while adding five service aces. Weaver also posted 11 assists in the match. Kayla Anders paced Ramapo with 15 kills on 21 attempts to hit .571. Fischer tallied 23 assists while adding three service aces and three digs. Senior Meagan Taege (Manahawkin, N.J.) collected a match high seven digs.

Match 3

USMMA defeated Simmons 3-1 (25-14, 21-25, 25-17, 25-14). Simmons was lead by Last with 10 kills, as well as a solid effort from Rachel Dufalt (Westport, mass.) dishing out 27 assists. USMMA was led by senior Jesselyn LaValley with 26 kills, one service ace and two blocks. Jenna Palaschak collected 30 assists and Sanchez tallied four kills while adding nine digs.

Simmons will return to action on Thursday, October 1 at 7:00pm for a GNAC matchup at Suffolk.
