Volleyball Falls to Johnson & Wales, 3-0 in Conference Quarterfinals

The Simmons Volleyball squad is gearing up for their second season under Head Coach Jason Conetta. The Sharks closed out the 2007 season with an 8-14 overall record that featured a young squad with just two returners, and a lot of potential.

The Simmons College volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision, by scores of 25-10, 25-13 and 25-22 to GNAC front-runner Johnson & Wales at the Harborside Recreation Center on Tuesday evening in the conference quarterfinals. With the loss, the Sharks finish the season with a 13-12 overall record, GNAC 6-6, while the Wildcats improve to 25-12, GNAC 11-1 and advance to the conference semifinals to face Emerson.

Simmons Volleyball came up short in Tuesday night?s 3-0 loss to UMass-Boston, despite the efforts of junior outside hitter Candyce Arena (Brookline, MA), who finished with a match-high 10 digs, as well as four kills and an ace.

Simmons Volleyball closed out the 2008 season with a 13-11 overall record, and a 6-6 mark in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference. This was a complete turnaround for second-year Head Coach Jason Conetta?s Sharks, whose overall record at the close of 2007 was 8-14. Simmons entered the 2008 GNAC tournament as 7th seed, the program?s highest ranking and first winning season since 1999.

Freshman Meaghan Flynn (Laguna Beach, Calif.) led the Sharks with six kills, while sophomore Taylor Pederson (San Antonio, Texas) had five kills.  Freshman setter Rosie Ferreira (Wassenaar, Netherlands) tallied a team-high 16 assists in the loss. Junior captain Jessica Hambleton (Methuen, Mass.) and Flynn combined for 13 digs.

"I was extremely happy to watch our young freshmen and sophomore class blossom on the court last night and play as if they have been there before with complete determination and tons of energy," said Head Coach Jason Conetta.  "We gave a great fight and understand what we must work on to become an elite team in the GNAC next season.  To have a winning season, the first since 1999 is a true accomplishment for these girls as they went from an 8-14 team to a 13-11 and playoff contending team in a matter of only one season.  If we continue to make these strides I am thrilled as to what next season as well as seasons to come will bring to the volleyball program here at Simmons College."
