Arena Digs Deep, Sharks Lose to UMass-Boston, 3-0

The Simmons Volleyball squad is gearing up for their second season under Head Coach Jason Conetta. The Sharks closed out the 2007 season with an 8-14 overall record that featured a young squad with just two returners, and a lot of potential.

The Simmons College volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision, by scores of 25-10, 25-13 and 25-22 to GNAC front-runner Johnson & Wales at the Harborside Recreation Center on Tuesday evening in the conference quarterfinals. With the loss, the Sharks finish the season with a 13-12 overall record, GNAC 6-6, while the Wildcats improve to 25-12, GNAC 11-1 and advance to the conference semifinals to face Emerson.

Simmons Volleyball came up short in Tuesday night?s 3-0 loss to UMass-Boston, despite the efforts of junior outside hitter Candyce Arena (Brookline, MA), who finished with a match-high 10 digs, as well as four kills and an ace.

Simmons Volleyball closed out the 2008 season with a 13-11 overall record, and a 6-6 mark in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference. This was a complete turnaround for second-year Head Coach Jason Conetta?s Sharks, whose overall record at the close of 2007 was 8-14. Simmons entered the 2008 GNAC tournament as 7th seed, the program?s highest ranking and first winning season since 1999.

The Sharks lost in three straight games, 25-13, 25-10, 25-13. The Beacons' Kate McWhorter (Bakersfield, CA) matched her season-high with 15 kills and owned a .500 hitting percentage to fuel a team hitting mark of .400.

Freshman outside hitter Kate Fionte (Andover, MA) led Simmons with four kills and a .267 hitting percentage to go with three digs.

"We started off at a great speed, going point for point with UMass until a few errors let the game slip mid way through game 1," said Head Coach Jason Conetta. "Game 2 was a repeat of game 1 where the Sharks were battling point for point early on in the match. Again, a few costly errors and miscommunication led to the downfall in game 2."

The Sharks will bounce back for their next game on Saturday, September 13 at 11:00am, at home v. Mass Maritime.
