Volleyball Tops Mount Ida, 3-2

Simmons Volleyball picked up two wins against Daniel Webster and Castleton in Nashua, NH on Saturday.

Junior Amanda Weaver (Eaton, Ohio) recorded her thirteenth straight match with double digit assists as the Simmons College volleyball team defeated Mount Ida, 3-2, by scores of 25-18, 17-25, 13-25, 25-22 and 15-13, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference play, on Saturday afternoon at the Holmes Sports Center. With the win, the Sharks improve to 7-6 (GNAC, 2-2), while the Mustangs fall to 9-9 (GNAC, 2-2).

Weaver tallied a team high 30 assists and also earned double digits in digs with 14. Freshman Meaghan Flynn (Laguna Beach, Calif.) also recorded a double-double with 11 kills and 34 digs on the afternoon.

Simmons came out strong, winning the first game 25-18, with a solid all around team performance.  However, the Sharks would go on to drop the next two games as the Mustangs, one of the top contenders in the GNAC conference fought back to take game two, 25-17 and game three, 25-13.  Sophomore Nicky Loring (Derry, N.H.) provided sharp hitting from the right side to help the Sharks take game four, 25-22.  Freshman Kate Fionte (Andover, Mass.) and Flynn fueled the Sharks offense in the final game with key aces and kills, propelling the Sharks to a 15-13 win in game five, and Simmons' second conference victory of the season.

Jessica Hambleton (Methuen, Mass.) and Chelsea Smith (Manchester, N.H.) also contributed to the Sharks stellar defense combining for 24 digs.

"This was the biggest conference victory in my two years here at Simmons, I am incredibly proud of our team," said Head Coach Jason Conetta. This is a tremendous stepping stone for this program as the Sharks have as many wins in the first half of this season as they did in total last season."
