Castigliego Named GNAC Pitcher of the Year; Headlines Five Receiving All-GNAC Recognition

WINTHROP, Mass. – Ranked third in the nation in wins, senior right-hander Maddie Castigliego was tabbed as the 2022 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Pitcher of the Year announced Tuesday afternoon.

Castigliego also was named to all-conference First Team along with senior Christie Bott. Senior Alex Morang and sophomore Jordyn Rubin earned Second Team recognition, while senior Allie Mulhern was selected to the Third Team. Rubin and junior Sam Barr were named to All-Rookie Team and senior Emma Thacher named to the GNAC All-Sportsmanship Team.

Leading the nation in complete games, Castigliego posted a single-season best 25-13-1 record with a 2.61 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP, while fanning 188 opposing batters. Additionally, she tossed a no-hitter in an 8-0 win over Rivier University and two-hit non-conference MIT in the program's first win against the Engineers in 10 years.

Senior Christie Bott joined Castigliego on the all-conference First Team, earning the honors for the first time in her career. The Long Island native posted a .408 batting average (20-49) with a 1.271 OPS (.796 SLG%, .475 OBP) against GNAC foes, while collecting her 100th career hit against Saint Joseph's (ME) in game one of the conference tournament.

Ranked in the top-five amongst the nation's leaders in hit by pitches, senior Alex Morang earned Second Team honors for the second time in her collegiate career. The Maine native hit .453 against conference opponents, while playing sold defense at the hot corner, committing one error in her last 12 games.

Along with Morang, sophomore Jordyn Rubin was also named to the Second Team. Rubin registered the second highest batting average against GNAC foes on the Sharks, posting a .479 batting average with a staggering 1.474 OPS (.938 SLG%, .536 OBP). The fellow Maine resident was selected to the GNAC All-Rookie Team.

Ending season with a 26-game hitting streak, senior Allie Mulhern earned Third Team recognition. Ranked 12th in the nation in stolen bases, she surpassed the program record in stolen bases, successfully stealing 35 bags, while earning GNAC All-Tournament team honors with a .375 average in four post-season games.

Junior Sam Barr rounded out the Sharks, joining Rubin on the GNAC All-Rookie Team. Barr hit .383 with four doubles, three triples, five homeruns and 25 RBI against conference foes from the bottom of the Simmons lineup.
