Castigliego Fans Seven as Softball Knocks Off Westfield State, 7-2

CLERMONT, Fla. – Senior right-hander Maddie Castigliego tossed her third complete game of the season to lead Simmons softball to a 7-2 win over Westfield State University, Friday morning. Castigliego was efficient in the circle, fanning seven Owls on 77 pitches – 60 for strikes.

The Sharks offense gave Castigliego a lead before even stepping foot on the rubber, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. With the bases loaded and one out, senior Alex Morang took and an 0-1 offering the opposite way to plate fellow seniors Shannon McMahon and Christie Bott. After Morang swiped second to move into scoring position, sophomore Jordyn Rubin laced an opposite field single into left field to bring in Castigliego to take a 3-0 lead.

Castigliego registered five strikeouts through the first three innings, including striking out the side in the bottom of the second. The Bristol, Rhode Island native helped her own cause at that plate in the top of the fifth, slugging a two-run shot to left-center field to increase the lead to 6-0.

In the top of seventh, sophomore Jordyn Rubin drove in the finals Simmons runs, with a two-out base-hit back up the middle to plate McMahon. But it was all Castigliego needed.
