AUBURNDALE, Mass. - First year starting pitcher Tori Gomes (Taunton, Mass.) hurled a one-hit shutout in six innings to fuel the Simmons College softball team in a doubleheader sweep over host Lasell College this afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action at Taylor Field in Auburndale, Mass. The Sharks improve to 9-10 overall and 3-5 in league play, while the Lasers fall to 5-13 and 2-6.

Simmons rapped out nine extra base hits on the day, including four triples and saw five players collect four or more hits in the two games combined.

Gomes struck out five and walked two in six complete innings to earn the game two victory and improve to 4-4 on the season for the Sharks.

Senior second baseman Mikaela Caracciolo (North Attleboro, Mass.) finished the afternoon going 4-7 with two runs batted in, a pair of triples, four runs scored and a walk for Simmons, while first year first baseman Alexandra Moleski (Bridgeport, Conn.) was 3-4 in both games to go 6-8 on the day with two RBI and a double. Junior second baseman Brianna Rastello (Salem, N.H.) was 4-8 in the two games to go with four runs driven in, three runs, a double and a triple and senior center fielder Heather White (Westfield, Mass.) collected four hits in eight at-bats, while knocking in a run, scoring a run and recording a double. Junior left fielder Emma D'Arpino (Johnston, R.I.) was 4-6 on the day from the nine spot and scored three runs to go with two RBI.

Junior designated player Marissa Spivey (Brockton, Mass.) led Lasell for the day going 2-3 with at least one hit in both games and knocked in a run, while sophomore second baseman Ashley Gatchell (Franklin, Mass.) and senior first baseman Nicole LeBlanc (Easton, Mass.) each cracked a double on the afternoon.

The Sharks got on the board first in game one with three runs in the top of the third inning. D'Arpino and Caracciolo opened the frame with back-to-back bunt singles, respectively, to set up a two-run triple to right field off the bat of Rastello. Reeves grounded out to second to plate Rastello with the third run. The Lasers got a run back in the bottom of the inning when Gatchell led off the inning with a double and later scored on a one-out single to center from Spivey to cut the deficit to 3-1.

Simmons broke the contest open with a five-run seventh to take an 8-1 advantage. The top of the order went to work with one out as Caracciolo singled and Rastello doubled her home before Reeves crushed a triple to right field to give the visitors a 5-1 lead. White doubled Reeves home and Moleski singled to put runners on the corners. Senior Amy Maher (Milton, Mass.) pinch ran and promptly stole second and, an out later, first year designated player Mary Martunas (Rutland, Mass.) plated both White and Maher to give the Sharks an eight-spot on the board.

Lasell rallied for a run in the bottom of the inning, but that would be all for the game. Junior third baseman Mackenzie Madden (Mashpee, Mass.) drew a leadoff walk and Spivey reached on an error as Madden advanced to third on the play. LeBlanc registered a sacrifice fly to bring home Madden for the final run of the game.

Reeves (5-5) earned the victory for Simmons, scattering eight hits and walked a batter over seven complete innings, while allowing two runs (one earned) and striking out five. Senior Eileen Bergin (Arlington, Mass.) (2-6) suffered the loss for the Lasers, giving up seven runs on 12 hits and a walk to go with five strike outs in six and a third innings pitched.

The Sharks did all their scoring in two innings in game two with four runs in the second and five in the sixth. The first three batters reached to load the bases in the second inning for Simmons. Moleski and first year third baseman Dominique Ortiz (Lawrence, Mass.) each singled before Martunas drew a walk. Lasell looked to get out of the inning unscathed when it turned a double-play on a infield fly to third base that resulted in a putout and a force at the plate, but D'Arpino singled to center to bring home Martunas and Ortiz to give Simmons a 2-0 lead. Caracciolo tripled home D'Arpino and Rastello followed with an infield single to score Caracciolo for a 4-0 margin.

The Sharks added five more runs in the sixth for the 9-0 final tally. D'Arpino reached on a bunt single and came around to score on Caracciolo's second triple of the game. Caracciolo scored on an error, before Simmons loaded the bases, thanks, in part to singles from Reeves and White. Moleski struck the big blow of the frame for the Sharks with a two-run double, before Ortiz knocked in the final run with a sacrifice fly.

Spivey singled with one out in the third inning for the only hit of the game for the home team.

Junior starting pitcher Krystel Enko (Haydenville, Mass.) (2-7) took the loss for the Lasers, yielding four runs on five hits and two walks, while striking out a pair of batters.

Simmons will be in action again tomorrow when it travels to Auburn, Mass. for a GNAC twinbill vs. Anna Maria College at the Pappas Recreational Complex. Lasell will also play tomorrow, heading to West Hartford, Conn. to take on University of Saint Joseph for a 12:00 p.m. doubleheader.
