Sharks Defeat Rams 11-1 and 15-0 in Five Innings

BOSTON, Mass. -- Simmons Softball scored 26 runs over ten innings to defeat the Suffolk University Rams 11-1 and 15-0 in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference action this afternoon at Popoulo Field in the North End. Sharks freshman Hannah Cunningham (Cotuit, Mass.) hit her first collegiate grand slam to help the Sharks sweep their third conference doubleheader of the year.

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. -- Simmons softball split a Great Northeast Athletic Conference doubleheader against Pine Manor College Friday afternoon, shutting out the Gators in the first game 3-0 before falling in the second, 3-2 in the seventh inning. During the break, the Sharks honored their two seniors, Sami Hodgkins (Westminster, Vt.) and Amanda Gould (Kingston, N.H.) for their accomplishments and contributions to the program.

In the first game, the Sharks got on the leaderboard in the bottom of the second when Cailin Pagel (Dorchester, Mass.) singled to centerfield to drive in Christina Mulcahy (Cambridge, Mass.), who reached on a well placed bunt down the third base line and Amanda Gould (Kingston, N.H.) who reach first on a error by the short stop.

After a scoreless third inning, the Rams cut Sharks lead in half when Nicole Rosa doubled to left field, then stole third base before scoring off a suicide squeeze play when Karina Bolster bunted down the third base line.

Simmons responded in the bottom of the fourth when Pagel hit a lead off double and scored off an error by the left fielder. Katie McCarthy (Falmouth, Maine) hit a double down the right field line to send H. Cunningham across home plate to take a 4-1 lead.

The Sharks had a monstrous bottom of the fifth, scoring seven runs off five hits. Gould starting things off with a single before Mulcahy hit a single to score Gould. Pagel added her third hit of the day with a single to right field. Jen Field (Windham, Maine) reached first on an error by the first baseman before stealing second and both Pagel and Field scored off an error by the pitcher.

With the bases cleared, Ari King (Westford, Mass.) hit a double to center field followed by a H. Cunningham walk and McCarthy reached first on a fielder's choice. Emily Cunningham (Cotuit, Mass.) hit an inside the park three-run home run to end the game.

Amanda Cordiero picked up the win for the Sharks on the mound, pitching all five innings and giving up only three hits and no walks. Sarah Chasse took the loss for the Rams.

In the second game of the doubleheader, the Sharks scored five runs in the first, one in the second, and nine in the fourth to defeat the Rams 15-0.

In the bottom of the Gould hit an inside the park three-run homer, driving in E. Cunningham and Pagel. Mulcahy singled and then scored off a single from pitcher Lauren Backhaus (Windsor, Conn.). The Sharks added a run in the second off a solo home run by E. Cunningham, her second of the day, increasing the Sharks lead to six.

With a scoreless third inning, and a one, two, three top of the fourth by Backhaus, H. Cunningham hit a grand slam over the high left field fence to put the game out of reach.

Backhaus pitched all five innings, giving up only one hit, while recording 10 strikeouts for the win.

The Sharks return to the field on Saturday, April 7th when they host GNAC rival Emmanuel College at UMass Boston for a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m. The Rams host Rivier on the same date for a doubleheader with a 12:00 p.m. start.
