Softball Dominates Wildcats; 6-2, 7-5

Simmons Softball recorded two wins against Great Northeast Athletic Conference rival Johnson and Wales on Friday afternoon. Sophomore pitcher Courteney Collier struck out 15 Wildcat batters on the day, and sophomore Annie Thompson had four home runs. The two sophomores led the Sharks to two victories, 6-2, 7-5. With the wins, Simmons is now 10-12 GNAC, 12-21 overall.

Game One


Courteney Collier got the win going the distance for the Sharks in game one, with 8 strikeouts, 1 walk and only 4 hits.


Annie Thompson started up the offense in the bottom of the first, leading off with a solo home run. Emily Nalband and Sam Green followed with two singles—both would eventually score.


Simmons lead 3-0 after the first. The Sharks scored another run in the second and two more in the fourth.


Annie Thompson was 2-3 with two home runs and three RBIs. Emily Nalband had two singles. Liz Dahlgren had a double. Sam Green, Kristen Souza and Stephanie Murray also had singles.


Game Two


Courteney Collier went the distance again in game two, with 7 strikeouts and two walks.


JWU jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first with three straight singles and scoring two runs.


Simmons came back in the bottom of the 1st and cut the lead in half with another leadoff solo shot by Thompson.


The Sharks took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the second with a leadoff triple by Kelly Garrity, sacrifice fly by Murray and another solo shot by Thompson.


Simmons padded on two more runs in the bottom of the third. JWU came back and scored 3 runs to tie it up in the top of the fifth.


The Sharks bounced back in the bottom of fifth to take the lead 6-5: Garrity lead off with another stand-up triple and Thompson singled her in.


Simmons scored an insurance run, to make it 7-5, in the bottom of the sixth when Amanda Gould doubled and Ashley Wheeler singled her in.


Leading the offensive charge:
Thompson 3-3 with two home runs, a single and three RBIs
Gould was 3-4 with two singles and a double
Garrity was 2-4 with two triples
Wheeler and Green were also both 2-4 with two singles apiece.

The Sharks return to action on Saturday, April 18 at noon, when they celebrate Senior Day at their home contest vs. Rivier.
