Simmons Softball split Thursday's doubleheader with Great Northeast Athletic Conference foe Mount Ida, taking game one 3-1, but dropping game two 4-0. With the split, Simmons advances to 7-16 on the year, 5-7 in the GNAC.

Game One

A leadoff walk from Simmons' Annie Thompson (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) in the first inning and a roped double to right center field by Emily Nalband (Litchfield, Conn.) put runners on second and third with no outs. A wild pitch crossed the first run for Simmons making it 1-0. A Mustangs throwing error plated a second run for the Sharks, ending the second inning with Simmons ahead 2-0.

In the top half of the fourth inning, the Sharks added an insurance run from a Mount Ida error. After a leadoff pop out, Simmons senior Kristen Souza (New Bedford, Mass.) singled to left field and an error put her on second base with one down. Next, a fly out put Souza on third to give the Sharks and opportunity to stretch the lead.  A throwing error by the Mustangs second baseman plated another score for Simmons to take a 3-1 lead.

Sharks sophomore Courteney Collier (Bolton, Mass.) went the distance on the mound with six strikeouts and surrendering seven hits. Collier was able to work out of a few tough jams, including bases loaded with no outs in the first, and two other jams in the third and sixth.

Game Two

Game two was a different story for Simmons, with Mount Ida silencing the Sharks bats to only three hits. The Mustangs scored two and led in the bottom of the first with a 2-0 advantage. Two more runs followed in the bottom of the third and fifth to seal the score 4-0 in Mount Ida's favor.

Simmons had singles from Thompson, Sam Green (Bridgewater, Mass.) and Leah Derderian (Boylston, Mass.).

Sammi Letizio (Windham, N.H.) got the loss for Simmons, giving up 8 runs and striking out 7.

The Sharks return to action with a doubleheader on Friday, April 10 at Pine Manor College at 3:00pm.
