Three Simmons Softball Players Honored by NFCA

Simmons College freshman third baseman Dannie Szabo (White Plains, N.Y.) was named the 2008 ECAC Division III New England Softball Rookie of the Year and to the 2008 ECAC Division III New England All-Star First Team as announced by the Eastern College Athletic Conference on Wednesday.

Third baseman Dannie Szabo (White Plains, NY) was named to the 2008 NFCA's First-Team All-Region. Talarico (Ware, MA), at shortstop, and Letizio (Windham, NH), at pitcher, were named to the Third-Team All-Region in the At-Large category.

These honors are the latest for the Sharks, who are coming off a 33-12 season and a third place finish at the 2008 ECAC tournament.

Szabo had a standout first season with Simmons Softball, earning 2008 Rookie of the Year honors from the ECAC and the GNAC. She ranked among GNAC leaders in batting average (.474), slugging percentage (.818), on base percentage (.523), hits (65), RBI (53), home runs (9) and stolen bases (22).  Szabo also ranked among national leaders in Division III in runs batted in per game (22nd, 1.20) and batting average (29th, .474).

Talarico '08 a two-time captain and the college's career leader in home runs and RBI, led the team in runs scored (48) and doubles (13). She was an at-large selection for the third team after ranking among GNAC leaders in batting average (.414), home runs (7), runs scored (48), doubles (13), triples (4), RBI (39) and stolen bases (10). 

Letizio, a rising junior, set the program's single-season record for wins by a pitcher (22), and posted a team-best in ERA (1.54), strikeouts (165) and complete games (21).  Letizio was named to the all-GNAC first team after leading the conference in wins and ranking among national leaders in walks allowed per seven innings (10th, .79) and wins (11th, 22).
