BOSTON, Mass. -- The Simmons University field hockey team was defeated by visiting Wellelsey College, 3-1, this morning on Daly Field in Brighton, Mass. The Sharks fall to 7-10 on the season, while the Blue improve to 8-8.

Wellesley dominated possession, especially in the second half with a 14-2 shot advantage as part of a 22-7 count for the match. The Blue also held a 9-3 margin on penalty corners. 

Sophomore Julia Rappaport (Bala Cynwyd, Pa.) scored a pair of goals to lead Wellesley.

The Blue scored twice in the opening 4:15 to take control of the game early. Rappaport put Wellesley on the board exactly 100 seconds into the first period when she finished in front of the Simmons cage on the first shot of the game. The Blue took a 2-0 lead on the team's second shot when first year Amy Kate Williams (Greenville, S.C.) fired a sweeping backhand into the back of the cage. 

Simmons cut the Wellesley advantage to one in the second period. Senior forward Olivia Trull (Lowell, Mass.) netted her tenth marker of the season 2:34 into the frame to make the score 2-1. Junior Liz Poteat (Westfield, Mass.) played the ball to Trull off a rebound, as the Sharks capitalized on a rebound following the initial attempt on a penalty corner. The visitors continued to lead, 2-1, at the half. 

The Blue outshot the Sharks 7-0 in the third period but junior keeper Lucy McNamara (Brewster, Mass.) made seven saves to keep Simmons in the game. Wellesley continued to control play in the fourth, outshooting the Sharks, 7-2. Rappaport finally broke through to seal the game, scoring her second of the game and sixth of the season, when she redirected a cross from junior Carson Dennis (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.) past the goalline with 4:34 left in the contest to make the score 3-1.

McNamara finished with 15 saves in the Simmons cage, while Blue junior goalkeeper Janelle Sullivan (Philadelphia, Pa.) turned back four shots in the win. 

The Sharks return to action on Wednesday, October 30 when they travel to Newton, Mass. to take on Great Northeast Athletic Conferece foe Lasell University at 3:30 p.m., while Wellesley returns home to host University of Massachusetts Dartmouth in non-conference play on the same day at 4:00 PM.
