Field Hockey Rolls Past Becker, 6-0 in Season Opener

LEICESTER, Mass. ? First-year forward Jenna Gagnon (Waterville, Maine) recorded two goals and an assist to lead the visiting Simmons Sharks to a 6-0 win over host Becker College in the field hockey opener for both programs on Tuesday afternoon at Alumni field. 

BOSTON, MA ? Senior midfielder Seneca Martensson (East Longmeadow, Mass.) tallied a pair of goals to lead the Simmons College field hockey team to a 7-0 victory over host Wheelock College this evening at Winsor Field in Boston, Mass.  The Sharks win their third straight match to improve to 4-1 overall, while the Wildcats fall to 0-6.

BOSTON, Mass. -- Simmons field hockey recorded two shots off a corner with time expired but were unable to convert as the WPI Engineers went on to win, 3-2 in non-conference action Tuesday evening in the Sharks final home game of the season.

The Sharks are now 1-0 to start the year while the Hawks of Becker open at 0-1.

 

Simmons first-year forward Hailey Bruno-Moulton (South Berwick, Maine) got the scoring started with 18:38 remaining in the first half, taking a pass from Gagnon as she split the Becker defense and found the back of the net to put the Sharks up 1-0. Then with 3:40 left in the opening stanza, Bruno-Moulton fed first-year forward Mary Neidhardt (Middlefield, Conn.) for a score as the Sharks went up by two going into halftime.

 

In the second half, the floodgates opened for Simmons. Gagnon scored just 2:52 into the period, assisted by senior midfielder Seneca Martensson (East Longmeadow, Mass.). Bruno-Moulton recorded her second score 8:57 into the half, taking it in herself. Then with 23:25 left on the clock, Gagnon had her second goal of the game, as the Sharks took a commanding 5-0 lead. Finally, junior Kelly Williamson (Natick, Mass.) extended the lead to six with a solo score with 9:07 remaining in the game.

 

Sophomore goalkeeper Carolyn Baremore (East Lyme, Conn.) tallied two saves in the second half for the Sharks, while Becker senior Samantha-Jo Dilkes (Little Falls, N.J.) and sophomore Gabrielle Gallo (Northport, N.Y.) each recorded six stops, splitting halves. Becker finished the day with two shots while Simmons tallied 21.

 

Becker will be back on the field on Saturday when they travel to Clark University to take on their crosstown rivals, the Cougars, in a 1:00 p.m. contest. Simmons travels to MIT to face the Engineers on Thursday in a 4:00 p.m. non-conference matchup.
