Volleyball Splits GNAC Tri-Match; Falls to Colby-Sawyer (3-1), Defeats Albertus Magnus (3-0)

BOSTON, Mass. ? First year middle blocker Amanda Fortune (Round Rock, Texas) led the Simmons women?s volleyball team with 19 kills, five aces and six blocks in a tri-match split, falling to visiting Colby-Sawyer College, 3-1 (16-25, 25-21, 28-26, 25-19), before defeating Albertus Magnus College, 3-0 (25-13, 29-27, 25-16), today at Moore Gymnasium in Boston, Mass. Colby-Sawyer picked up its second victory of the day with a 3-0 (25-13, 25-21, 28-26) win over Albertus Magnus in the middle match to improve to 14-8 overall and 6-2 in league play. The Sharks are now 7-10 and 3-3, while Albertus Magnus falls to 8-9 and 1-6.

Albertus Magnus sophomore outside hitter Genesis Cora-Luquis (Meriden, Conn.) led all players on the day with 24 kills on a .262 hitting percentage in six sets, while adding 27 digs and an ace. 

First year outside hitter Maddie Bromley (Truckee, Calif.) averaged 4.36 points per set for the day with 21 kills, eight aces and three blocks to go with 32 digs in seven sets, while rookie setter Anna Allen (Los Angeles, Calif.) averaged 9.5 assists per set with 57 in addition to a pair of aces and 12 digs. 

Fortune hit .486 for Simmons and sophomore libero Julia Fusco (Beverly, Mass.) picked up 37 digs for a 5.29 per set clip. 

Colby-Sawyer dropped the opening set to the Sharks, before rebounding to win the final three frames for the victory. Bromley and senior middle blocker Courtney Murray (Quincy, Mass.) each put down 10 kills against the Sharks for Colby-Sawyer in the day's opening match. Bromley added 19 digs, five aces and a pair of block assists, while Allen set for 38 assists and scooped up eight digs. First year outside hitter Maddie Conroy (Middlebury, Conn.) and classmate Sam Mohammed (Killingworth, Conn.) each swung for nine kills to give the Chargers four players with nine or more to help fuel a .195 hitting mark in the four-set victory. Fortune was outstanding for Simmons, hitting .524 to fuel a 12-kill effort that saw her commit just one attack error and add six digs and two aces. Sophomore middle hitter Megan Purser (Miami, Fla.) smashed 10 kills on a .381 hitting clip, while sophomore setter Faith Gray-Williams (Las Vegas, Nev.) registered nine kills, 18 digs and 15 assists to fall a kill short of a triple-double. Junior setter Kenna McCarthy (Shelter Island, N.Y.) set for 26 assists and fired a pair of aces. Fusco also picked up 22 digs and served for two aces. 

Colby-Sawyer cruised in the first set with Albertus Magnus, but the Falcons challenged within four points in the second, before battling the Chargers to a 28-26 third-set loss in the Colby-Sawyer three-set win. Murray and Bromley each put down 11 kills with Murray hitting .478 and Bromley picking up 13 digs and firing three aces. Allen set for 19 assists and served up a pair of aces in the two sets that she appeared in, while first year defensive specialist Meghan Flynn (Reading, Mass.) got down for 10 digs in three sets. First year outside hitter Summer Onorato (East Haven, Conn.) spiked for a team-high 11 kills and added 10 digs for a double-double to lead Albertus Magnus and Cora-Luquis put away nine kills to go with 10 digs. First year setter Jaiden Williams (Orange, Conn.) directed the AMC offense with 21 assists and added six digs, while junior libero Jesselle Guzman (Santa Teresa, N.M.) came up with 12 digs. 

The Sharks looked strong in the first and third sets vs. Albertus Magnus, hitting .389 and .241 in the respective frames, but the Falcons would not go away quietly in the middle set, forcing the Sharks to the brink, before they hung on for a 29-27 margin. First year outside hitter Krissy Lloyd (Tampa, Fla.) led Simmons with nine kills on a .226 hitting percentage and added four digs, while Gray-Williams finished with eight kills, eight digs, two blocks, an ace and 16 assists. First year outside hitter Reilly Coombs (Deland, Fla.) swung for eight kills and got down for seven digs, while McCarthy recorded 21 assists and six digs and Fusco collected 15 digs and two aces. Cora Luquis led all players with 15 kills on a .333 hitting mark to go with a match-high 17 digs and Williams set for 19 assists to go with six digs. 

Simmons returns to action on Wednesday, October 6 when it crosses the street to take on GNAC rival Emmanuel College at 7:00 p.m. Colby-Sawyer travels to Salem, Mass. on October 11 for a 7:00 p.m. tilt with Salem State University and Albertus Magnus hosts State University of New York Purchase on October 8 at 7:00 p.m.
