Coombs Leads Volleyball in 3-2 Loss at UMass Boston

BOSTON, Mass. -- First year outside hitter Reilly Coombs (Deland, Fla.) put down a career-high 12 kills to lead the Simmons University women's volleyball team in a 3-2 (20-25, 24-26, 25-17, 25-13, 15-13) loss to host University of Massachusetts Boston this evening at the Clark Athletic Center in Boston, Mass. The Sharks fall to 5-8 on the season, while the Beacons improve to 9-4.

BABSON PARK, Mass. -- First year Reilly Coombs (Deland, Fla.) led all players with eight kills to lead the Simmons University women's volleyball team in a 3-0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-18) loss to host Babson College this evening at Staake Gymnasium in Babson Park, Mass. The Sharks fall to 8-11 on the season, while the Beavers win their fifth straight match to improve to 16-5.

The Sharks fall to 5-8 on the season, while the Beacons improve to 9-4.

UMass Boston hit .227 for the match and fired 23 aces, while holding Simmons to a .089 hitting mark. 

Coombs added nine digs and four aces to her night for the Sharks, while hitting .162. Sophomore outside hitter Riley Roberge (Peoria, Ariz.) tallied 13 points with six kills and seven aces to give her 20 aces in her last three matches. She also added four digs. Sophomore libero Julia Fusco (Beverly, Mass.) picked up a match-high 22 digs to go with a personal-best eight assists and an ace.

Senior outside hitter Eileen Shi (San Francisco, Calif.) led the Beacons with a near triple-double of 19 kills, 10 digs and nine aces, while hitting .326 for the match. Sophomore hitter Emilia Czapiewska (Saint Paul, Minn.) swung for 11 kills, picked up six digs, served up two aces and got up for a block assist. Senior setter Rachel Maslach (Berlin Center, Ohio) set for 26 assists and added nine digs and senior defensive specialist Macayla Chianco (Clearwater, Fla.) scooped up 16 digs to go with an ace.

Simmons cruised to an opening-set victory, before hanging on to win the second set that saw neither team lead by more than four points. UMass Boston dominated the third and fourth sets to set up the deciding fifth set. The Sharks led for the majority of the fifth set and held a 12-11 edge and was tied at 13-13, before the Beacons tallied the final two points to in the set and the match.

The Sharks return to action on Saturday, September 29 when they head to Weston, Mass. for a Great Northeast Athletic Conference tri-match with host Regis (Mass.) at 12:00 p.m. and number four nationally-ranked Johnson & Wales University at 2:00 p.m. UMass Boston hosts Little East Conference rival Western Connecticut State University on the same day at 12:00 p.m.
