Volleyball Receives AVCA Team Academic Award

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- The Simmons College women's volleyball team received the Team Academic Award for the 2017-18 season from the American Volleyball Coaches Association, it was announced by the AVCA.

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- The Simmons College women's volleyball team received the Team Academic Award for the 2017-18 season from the American Volleyball Coaches Association, it was announced by the AVCA.

The Sharks were one of 173 NCAA Division III volleyball programs to earn the team honor. 

The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.

Simmons volleyball earned a 3.44 cumulate GPA as a team from the past year and boasted seven student-athletes with a 3.6 or higher, including one player with a perfect 4.0. The Sharks also earned the honor for the 2013-14, 2014-15 and 2015-16 campaigns as well.

Simmons finished the season with a 21-10 record, including 11-1 in league play, to establish school records for season victories and conference wins, and advanced to the GNAC Championship for the first time in school history. The Sharks closed out the season by winning 12 straight matches, before their season came to an end in the conference championship as the number two seed.
