BEVERLY, Mass. - Simmons College's Morgan Weeg (Goodyear, Ariz.) was named to the New England Women's Volleyball Coaches Association All-Rookie Team, it was recently announced by the organization.
The NEWVA Annual Award recipients are nominated by and voted on by the organization's member head coaches. The coaches represent the seven competing conferences in NCAA Division III including the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC), Little East Conference (LEC), Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC), North Atlantic Conference (NAC), New England Collegiate Conference (NECC), New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC), and New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC).
Weeg earns the honor after being named to the GNAC All-Conference First Team two weeks ago.
Weeg burst onto the scene as one of the best players in the region, averaging 4.00 kills per set to rank second among GNAC leaders and first among rookies. Her clip also places her 29th within all NCAA Division III players and third amongst the nation's first year players. In addition, Weeg picked up 3.31 digs per frame to place 11th in the GNAC and established her as the only player in the league to average four or more kills and 3.3 or more digs per set. Named GNAC Rookie of the Week twice, Weeg's kill total is the third-most in a season at Simmons in at least a decade. The outside hitter started all 24 matches and played in all 86 sets for the Sharks, while ranking 15th in the league with a .190 hitting percentage. The Agua Fria High School product fired 29 aces for the fourth-most on the squad and her 22 blocks, including four solos, put her second on the team. Weeg registered double digits in either kills or digs in all but three matches on the season and posted 15 double-doubles for the year. The front court player also swung for 20 or more kills on six occasions, including a season-high of 29 in a 3-2 victory over Emerson College on October 1. Weeg came up with 20 or more digs twice and got down for a season-best total of 22 to go with 20 kills vs. Saint Joseph's College (Maine) on October 10. She also hit .300 or better nine times, including a mark of .609 to fuel a 14-kill three-set effort at Suffolk University on October 29. Weeg enjoyed a four-match stretch from October 1-10, where she averaged 5.67 kills and 4.53 digs per set, while hitting .352.
Simmons finished the season with a 12-12 overall mark, including 8-3 in league play to earn the number four seed in the GNAC Championship Tournament. The Sharks were beaten in the GNAC semifinals by eventual champion Johnson & Wales University on November 3.
