Hart Leads Volleyball to 3-0 Sweep at Albertus Magnus to Open the GNAC Slate

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Senior middle blocker Abby Hart (Westfield, Mass.) spiked for 14 kills and hit .448 for the match to lead the Simmons College women's volleyball team to a 3-0 victory over host Albertus Magnus College this afternoon in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference match at The Nest inside the Cosgrove Marcus Messer Athletic Center in New Haven, Conn. The Sharks improve to 2-4 overall and 1-0 in league play, while the Falcons fall to 2-7 and 0-1.

The Sharks improve to 2-4 overall and 1-0 in league play, while the Falcons fall to 2-7 and 0-1.

Simmons cruised to victory, winning the opening set, 25-14, before dominating the middle frame, 25-5 with a .444 team hitting markand taking the deciding set, 25-16. The Sharks hit a season-high .299 for the match and fired 19 service aces for their highest total since serving 19 last year vs. Albertus Magnus on October 10.

Hart committed just one attack error for the match and added a dig and a block solo for Simmons, while first year setter Carly Wanner-Hyde (Newington, Conn.) dished out a career-high 28 assists in her first match as the primary setter. Senior outside hitter Kat Guillotte (New Bedford, Mass.) swung for a season-high six kills with a .278 hitting mark, while coming up with six digs and four aces. Junior rightside hitter Amber Peterson (Las Vegas, Nev.) was lethal from the service line, firing a career-best 10 aces to go with a pair of kills and a dig. First year outside hitter Morgan Weeg (Goodyear, Ariz.) also contributed with six kills, fueled by a .333 hitting percentage and got down for seven digs, in addition to an ace.

First year outside hitter Ashley David (West Islip, N.Y.) led the charge for the Falcons with a team high four kills to go along with an assist and six digs.  In the middle, junior Marielis Muriel (New Haven, Conn.) paced the home team with six assists and eight digs.  Junior Ana Gomez (New Haven, Conn.) led the way with a game-high 16 digs.

The Sharks return to action on Tuesday, September 20 when they host Lesley University at Moore Gymnasium, while Albertus Magnus heads to New London, Conn. on September 22 to play Mitchell College at 5:00 p.m.
