Weeg, Hart Lead Volleyball Past Colby-Sawyer, 3-2, to Open Season

DANBURY, Conn. - First year outside hitter Morgan Weeg (Goodyear, Ariz.) posted a monster double-double of 20 kills and 21 digs in her collegiate debut and senior middle blocker Abby Hart (Westfield, Mass.) swung for a career-high 20 kills to lead the Simmons College women's volleyball team to a 3-2 victory over Colby-Sawyer College this evening at the Colonial Invitational hosted by Western Connecticut State University at Feldman Arena in Danbury, Conn. The Sharks improve to 1-0 on the season, while the Chargers fall to 0-1.

The Sharks improve to 1-0 on the season, while the Chargers fall to 0-1.

Simmons cruised to an opening set win with a 25-15 count, before falling in the second frame, 25-22. The Sharks reclaimed the match lead, outlasting Colby-Sawyer, 37-35, in the third set, before the Chargers knotted the match at 2-2 following a 25-17 fourth-set victory. Simmons claimed its season opener by winning the fifth and deciding frame, 15-10.

Weeg wasted no time making an impact in her first collegiate match for the Sharks, adding an ace and two total blocks to her 20-20 performance, while owning a .208 hitting mark. Hart was incredibly efficient, boasting a .471 hitting percentage and added four digs and a pair of block assists. First year setter Kenna McCarthy (Shelter Island, N.Y.) doled out 60 assists in her collegiate debut for an average of 12 per set to go with 10 digs, while senior libero Alex Itasaka (Bradford, Mass.) came up with 22 digs. Senior outside hitter Cailin Fredrickson (Columbia, Md.) also contributed with 11 kills, four aces, two digs and a pair of block assists.

Senior rightside hitter Gabrielle Rodriguez (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) led Colby-Sawyer with 16 kills and added 19 digs, while first year defensive specialist Caroline McCoy (Longmeadow, Mass.) picked up 22 digs to lead the Chargers' defensive effort. Senior setter Elyssa Clairmont (Sanbornton, N.H.) recorded 28 assists, scooped up 14 digs, put down three kills, fired a pair of aces and registered a block solo to Colby-Sawyer.

Simmons returns to action tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. when it takes on Saint Joseph's College of Long Island at Feldman Arena, while the Chargers play Western Connecticut State at 10:00 a.m.
