BOSTON, Mass. – The Simmons University women's tennis team was defeated by visiting Regis (Mass.), 8-1, this afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference play on Daly Courts in Brighton, Mass. The Sharks fall to 1-6 overall and 0-2 in league play, while the Pride improve to 5-1 and 3-1.

Regis owned a 2-1 edge following doubles play, but won all singles matches to earn the win.

Simmons lone point of the day was courtesy of a win at number three doubles. The first year combination of Megan McKeever (Stamford, Conn.) and Sarah Mariski (Portland, Maine) produced a hard-fought 8-6 win over sophomore Ginger Boodakian (Burlington, Mass.) and sophomore Gracie Jarest (Wrentham, Mass.) to cut the Pride lead to 2-1, heading into singles play. The triumph was the first in doubles on the collegiate level for both players.

Junior Ariana McCormack (Worcester, Mass.) was one of four players to earn a pair of wins on the day to lead Regis. McCormack won at both first singles and doubles for Regis. She combined with senior Katasha Jarvis (Mt. Vernon, N.Y.) to earn an 8-2 victory in doubles play vs. the Simmons junior pairing of Nickie Nguyen (Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam/ Saint Joseph Preparatory (Mass.)) and Marissa Johnson (Norwell, Mass.). McCormack was the victor in straight sets over Nguyen in singles play, 6-4, 6-4, to give the Pride a 5-1 lead and secure the dual match victory. Jarvis was also a double-winner for the Pride, defeating Sharks senior Paola Rios (Miami, Fla.) in a three-set showdown. Jarvis won the opening set, handily, 6-1, but Rios came back to knot the match at one set-all with a 7-5 effort. The two players battled right to the end with Jarvis coming out on top, 7-6 (3), in the third frame.

Regis sophomore Carly Donovan (Harwich, Mass.) teamed with first year Katelyn Mogelnicki (Wethersfield, Conn.) to score an 8-3 doubles win at number two over the Simmons senior duo of Michelle Medici (South Portland, Maine) and Rios. Donovan gained her second win of the day with a 6-2, 6-4 victory at second singles over Johnson, while Mogelnicki won the first set (6-3) at fourth singles over Medici, but the Sharks senior came back to knot the match at one set apiece after a 6-4 win. Mogelnicki beared down and did not drop a game in the final frame for a 6-0 decision and the match.

Pride first year Lauren Mogelnicki (Wethersfield, Conn.) battled to a three-set victory at fifth singles, winning the final two sets, 6-2, 7-5, after Mariski posted a 6-3 opening set win for the Sharks. Kaeleigh FitzPatrick (South Windsor, Conn.) also won in three sets, taking down McKeever, 6-1, 6-4, in the final two frames. McKeever gutted out a 7-6 (5) first set victory, before FitzPatrick came back.

Simmons returns to the courts on Wednesday, September 26 when it hosts University of Massachusetts Boston on Daly Courts at 4:30 p.m., while Regis hosts Albertus Magnus on September 29 at 12:00 p.m.
