Tennis Falls at Mount Holyoke, 9-0

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- The Simmons University women's tennis team was defeated by host Mount Holyoke College, 9-0, this afternoon in South Hadley, Mass. The Sharks fall to 0-4 on the season, while the Lyons improve to 1-0 in their season opener.

Junior Nickie Nguyen (Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam/Saint Joseph Preparatory (Mass.)) won six games in a 6-1, 7-5 loss at first singles for Simmons to Mount Holyoke senior Ayame Yazawa (Tokyo, Japan). Yazawa was one of four double-winners for the Lyons. She also won at number one doubles in tandem with junior Ching-Ching Huang (Lukang Township, Taiwan) over Nguyen and junior Marissa Johnson (Norwell, Mass.), 8-1. Huang won her second match of the day for Mount Holyoke at second singles over Johnson, 6-1, 6-1.

Senior Paola Rios (Miami, Fla.) won five games at number four singles in a 6-3, 6-2 loss to MHC sophomore Anya Gerasimova (Salem, Ore.). Gerasimova teamed with Lyons junior Catherine Peabody (San Francisco, Calif.) to earn an 8-3 victory at number two doubles over Rios and Sharks senior Michelle Medici (South Portland, Maine). Peabody dropped just one game to down Medici, 6-0, 6-1 at number three singles.

First year Annissa Aamoum (Dulles, Va.) and Mount Holyoke senior Joy Maran (Santa Fe, N.M.) paired up to earn an 8-1 victory at third doubles over the Simmons first year duo of Sarah Mariski (Portland, Maine) and Megan McKeever (Stamford, Conn.). Mariski won four games at fifth singles in a 6-3, 6-1 loss to Lyons senior Madison Rosen (Portland, Ore.) and Mount Holyoke senior Clara Wang (Madison, Conn.) registered a 6-1, 6-3 win at sixth singles over Sharks first year Sabrina Brown (Mason, N.H.).

Simmons returns to action tomorrow when it hosts Lesley University for a 12:00 p.m. match on Daly Courts, while Mount Holyoke competes at the Tennis Hall of Fame Tournament in Newport, R.I. on September 21.
