Tennis Blanks Mount Ida, 9-0

NEWTON, Mass. ? The Simmons College women?s tennis team saw four players earn a pair of victories in a 9-0 dual-match win over host Mount Ida College this afternoon in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference match at the Mount Ida College Tennis Courts in Newton, Mass. The Sharks improve to 7-4 overall and 3-1 in league play, while the Mustangs fall to 1-7 and 0-3. 

NEWTON, Mass. – The Simmons College women's tennis team saw four players earn a pair of victories in a 9-0 dual-match win over host Mount Ida College this afternoon in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference match at the Mount Ida College Tennis Courts in Newton, Mass. The Sharks improve to 7-4 overall and 3-1 in league play, while the Mustangs fall to 1-7 and 0-3. 

Sophomore Nickie Nguyen (Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam/Saint Joseph's Preparatory (Mass.)) won at both first doubles and singles for the Sharks as one of four players to win in both singles and doubles action. 

The Simmons first year duo of Celia Speth (Deerfield, Mass.) and Elise Kenney (Orono, Maine) did not drop a game in an 8-0 victory at second doubles over the pair of sophomore Amanda Garner (Coventry, R.I.) and first year Molly O'Donnell (Danvers, Mass.). Speth continued her dominance in singles action for the Sharks with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at number two singles over first year Cierra Peaslee (Killingly, Conn.), while Kenney earned a 6-1, 6-2 victory at fourth singles for Simmons over senior Yuliana Chairez (Waltham, Mass.). Nguyen paired with classmate Marissa Johnson (Norwell, Mass.) for an 8-0 triumph at number one doubles over the Mustangs combo of Peaslee and first year Ginger Boodakian (Burlington, Mass.). 

Nguyen dropped just two games in a 6-2, 6-0 win at first singles for the Sharks over Boodakian to complete her day. Sophomore Lili Torres (Austin, Texas) and junior Kalen Michals (South Orange, N.J.)registered the first victory of their respective careers with an 8-4 win at number three doubles over Mount Ida's Chairez and junior Hannah Bassett (Needham, Mass.). Torres added another win to her day with a 6-1, 6-0 outing at fifth singles over Garner. 

Junior Paola Rios (Miami, Fla.) did not drop a game for Simmons in a 6-0, 6-0 win at number three singles over O'Donnell, while first year Esha Zarnaab Shafiq (Medford, Mass.) put together a 6-1, 6-1 effort vs. Bassett to earn her first collegiate victory for the Sharks at sixth singles. 

Simmons returns to the courts on Saturday October 7 when it hosts GNAC foe Johnson & Wales University for a Noon match on Daly Courts in Brighton, Mass., while the Mustangs head to Weston, Mass. to take on Regis (Mass.) on the same day and time.
