Speth Leads Tennis over Wentworth, 6-3

BOSTON, Mass. ? First year Celia Speth (Deerfield, Mass.) won both of her matches to lead the Simmons College women?s tennis team over visiting Wentworth Institute of Technology, 6-3, this afternoon at Daly Courts in Brighton, Mass. The Sharks win their fourth straight match to improve to 4-2, while the Leopards fall to 0-5. 

BOSTON, Mass. – First year Celia Speth (Deerfield, Mass.) won both of her matches to lead the Simmons College women's tennis team over visiting Wentworth Institute of Technology, 6-3, this afternoon at Daly Courts in Brighton, Mass. The Sharks win their fourth straight match to improve to 4-2, while the Leopards fall to 0-5. 

Speth paired with junior Paola Rios (Miami, Fla.) to earn an 8-4 decision at number three doubles over the Wentworth tandem of sophomore Sam McGibbon (Pembroke, Mass.) and junior Veronica Monteiro (North Andover, Mass.). Speth won her second match of the day for Simmons at fifth singles, winning in straight sets, 7-5, 6-1, over McGibbon, to record her fourth straight singles victory – all in straight sets. 

Junior Michelle Medici (South Portland, Maine) won the deciding point for the Sharks with a three-set triumph at number four singles over Leopards' junior Ellen Butts (Brookfield, Mass.), winning the final two sets with identical scores of 6-2, 6-2, after dropping the opening set, 7-5. 

Simmons held a 4-2 lead after Speth's singles win, but senior Caitlyn Briggs (Lee, Mass.) pulled Wentworth to within a point after registering a 6-4, 6-4 win over Simmons sophomore Nickie Nguyen (Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam/Saint Joseph Preparatory (Mass.)) at number two singles. 

Senior Olivia Lakes (Dorchester, Mass.) combined with sophomore Jessica Schroedl (Staatsburg, N.Y.) for an 8-6 victory at first doubles over the Leopards' duo of Butts and first year Ali Sollecito (Taunton, Mass.) and Briggs joined senior Sam Webb (Duxbury, Mass.) for an 8-4 effort over Nguyen and classmate Marissa Johnson (Norwell, Mass.) to even the match at 1-1 for Wentworth. 

Briggs brought the Leopards even again after winning at number one singles over Schroedl, 6-1, 6-3, before Johnson reclaimed the dual match lead for the Sharks with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Webb at third singles. First year Elise Kenney (Orono, Maine) closed out the match at sixth singles for Simmons, defeating Monteiro in three sets, winning the first set, 6-2, before Monteiro evened the match with a 6-2 middle set win. Kenney earned her second straight singles win in as many matches with a 6-4 third set victory. 

The Sharks return to action tomorrow when they host Mount Holyoke College at Daly Courts for a 12:00 p.m. start, while the Leopards host Western New England University on September 19 in a match to be played in Weston, Mass. on the campus of Regis (Mass.) at 7:00 p.m.
