Tennis Defeated by Gordon, 9-0

BOSTON, Mass. - The Simmons College women's tennis team was defeated by visiting Gordon College, 9-0, today in dual match play at Daly Courts in Brighton, Mass. The Sharks fall to 0-2 on the season, while the Fighting Scots improve to 1-1 in the first meeting of at least the 21st century between the schools.

WINCHESTER, Mass. - The Simmons College women's tennis team defeated Suffolk University, 5-2, this afternoon in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Championship Tournament Semifinals at the Winchester Tennis Center in Winchester, Mass.

BOSTON, Mass. - The Simmons College women's tennis team was defeated by visiting Gordon College, 9-0, today in dual match play at Daly Courts in Brighton, Mass. The Sharks fall to 0-2 on the season, while the Fighting Scots improve to 1-1 in the first meeting of at least the 21st century between the schools.

The Simmons sophomore tandem of Nickie Nguyen (Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam/St. Joseph Prep (Mass.) and Marissa Johnson (Norwell, Mass.) faced a 7-4 deficit to juniors Justine Hanson (Meadow Vista, Calif.) and Gabrielle Brucker (Eleva, Wisc.), before rallying to win three straight games to tie the match at 7-7. The Gordon duo regrouped and won the final two games to pull out the match, 9-7, and give the visitors a 3-0 lead heading into the intermission.

Sophomore Jessica Schroedl (Staatsburg, N.Y.) also bounced back from an early deficit in singles play at number one for the Sharks. The second-year player dropped the opening set to Hanson, 6-2, before coming back to win the second frame, 6-4. Hanson jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the super tie-breaking third set and held on for a 10-6 set triumph to win the final match of the afternoon.

Schroedl combined with junior Paola Rios (Miami, Fla.) at first singles, where the pair was beaten by Fighting Scots' senior Maddie Berry (Paso Robles, Calif.) and junior Kaelyn Hall (Sugar Land, Texas), 8-2. First years Gail Tynkov (Edison, N.J.) and Celia Speth (Deerfield, Mass.) also suffered defeat at the hands of Gordon senior Katherine Jefferys (Parkton, Md.) and first year Caitlin Kwok (Dana Point, Calif.), 8-1.

Kwok was one of six double winners for the Fighting Scots and won the deciding point for the visitors with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Speth at fifth singles. Hall set up the winning point by taking the first singles match of the day at number three with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Simmons junior Michelle Medici (South Portland, Maine)

Brucker played to a 6-2, 6-3 win over Tynkov at fifth singles and Jefferys posted a 6-1, 6-1 win over Nguyen at second singles for Gordon, while Berry defeated Rios, 6-1, 6-3 at number four singles for the Fighting Scots. 

The Sharks return to the courts on Thursday, September 7 when they host University of Massachusetts Boston for a 4:30 match on Daly Courts, while Gordon hosts Wentworth Institute of Technology on the same day at 4:00 p.m.
