Tennis Defeats Albertus Magnus, 6-1

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Simmons College women's tennis team saw three players win a pair of matches en-route to a 6-1 victory over host Albertus Magnus College this afternoon in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference match in New Haven, Conn. The Sharks improve to 4-5 overall, including 3-1 in league play, while the Falcons fall to 4-4 and 2-2.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Simmons College women's tennis team saw three players win a pair of matches en-route to a 6-1 victory over host Albertus Magnus College this afternoon in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference match in New Haven, Conn. The Sharks improve to 4-5 overall, including 3-1 in league play, while the Falcons fall to 4-4 and 2-2.

First year Mai Driesen (Fayetteville, N.Y.) and sophomore Michelle Medici (South Portland, Maine) were both double-winners on the day for Simmons and combined to win at number three doubles over the Albertus Magnus first year duo of Cayce Andrews (Hamden, Conn.) and Dayanlee Quezada-Coello (New Haven, Conn.), 8-0, to put the Sharks on the board. Medici clinched the dual-match victory for Simmons with a 6-3, 6-0 victory at fifth singles over first year Nallely Magana (East Haven, Conn.). Driesen earned a 6-0, 6-2 win at number four singles for the Sharks over junior Kelsea Wildman (Hamden, Conn.). 

First year Jessica Schroedl (Staatsburg, N.Y.) won a pair of matches on the day for Simmons as well. The rookie posted a 6-1, 6-2 triumph at first singles over senior Zaida Velazco (Dominican Republic). She also paired with junior Olivia Lakes (Dorchester, Mass.) to score an 8-2 win in pro-set form at first doubles. 

First year Marissa Johnson (Norwell, Mass.) and junior Mary Matthews (Wakefield, R.I.) battled to a 9-8 (5) victory at number two doubles for the Sharks over sophomores Alicia Weaver (Bethel, Conn.) and Izzy Sabino (Cheshire, Conn.).

Albertus Magnus' only point of the day came at number three singles with Sabino defeating Lakes, 6-4, 6-2. 

The final two singles matches were halted due to rain.

Simmons returns to the courts on Monday, October 10 when it hosts GNAC foe Anna Maria College on Daly Courts at 12:00 p.m., while the Falcons travel to Rhode Island to take on Johnson & Wales University on the same day at 1:00 p.m.
