Tennis Comes Back to Defeat Wentworth, 6-3

BOSTON, Mass. ? The Simmons College women?s tennis team erased a 3-0 deficit and won all six singles matches to post a 6-3 victory over host Wentworth Institute of Technology this afternoon in a dual match that was played at Daly Courts in Brighton, Mass. The Sharks win their third straight contest to improve to 3-4 on the season, while the Leopards fall to 2-9.

BOSTON, Mass. – The Simmons College women's tennis team erased a 3-0 deficit and won all six singles matches to post a 6-3 victory over host Wentworth Institute of Technology this afternoon in a dual match that was played at Daly Courts in Brighton, Mass. The Sharks win their third straight contest to improve to 3-4 on the season, while the Leopards fall to 2-9. 

Wentworth won all three doubles matches to open the tilt with a 3-0 lead, before Simmons made a comeback through singles play, winning all six matches in straight sets. 

First year Jessica Schroedl (Staatsburg, N.Y.) put the Sharks on the board with a 6-4, 6-2 decision at number one singles over Leopards' junior Caitlyn Briggs (Lee, Mass.), before classmate Mai Driesen (Fayetteville, N.Y.) cut the deficit to 3-2 with a 6-1, 6-1 effort at fourth singles over Wentworth junior Sam Webb (Duxbury, Mass.). Simmons junior Mary Matthews (Wakefield, R.I.) pulled the Sharks even at 3-3 with a 6-2, 6-1 victory at number six singles over sophomore Veronica Monteiro (North Andover, Mass.). 

First year Marissa Johnson (Norwell, Mass.) gave Simmons a 4-3 edge with a 6-2, 6-1 triumph at third singles over Leopards' junior Emily Jodoin (Burrillville, R.I.). Sophomore Michelle Medici (South Portland, Maine) fought to a 6-3, 6-4 victory at number five singles over sophomore Ellen Butts (Brookfield, Mass.) to give the Sharks the deciding point and a 5-3 lead. First year Nickie Nguyen (Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam/St. Joseph Prep (Mass.)) closed out the dual match with a 7-5, 6-4 win at number two singles over first year Olivia DeLuca (Dracut, Mass.). 

Briggs and Webb combined for an 8-4 victory in pro-set form over the Simmons duo of Schroedl and Driesen to take a 1-0 margin for Wentworth. The Leopards increased their lead to 2-0 following an 8-5 showing at second doubles from DeLuca and Jodoin over Nguyen and Johnson for the Sharks. Wentworth earned its third point of the day, before breaking pairs for singles play, when Butts and Monteiro teamed up at third doubles for gutty 9-8 (4) victory over Medici and Matthews to give the Leopards a 3-0 lead. 

Simmons returns to the courts on Saturday, October 1 when it heads to Newton, Mass. to take on Great Northeast Athletic Conference foe Mount Ida College at 12:00 p.m., while Wentworth plays on the same day in Quincy, Mass. against Eastern Nazarene College at 1:00 p.m.
