Khoury Leads Tennis to 9-0 Victory at Albertus Magnus; The Sharks Win their Sixth Straight

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Junior Caroline Khoury (Portsmouth, Ohio) was a double-winner to lead the Simmons College women's tennis team to a 9-0 victory over host Albertus Magnus College this afternoon in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference match in New Haven, Conn. The Sharks win their sixth straight dual match to improve to 9-2 overall and 6-0 in league play. They finish the GNAC slate undefeated for the seventh straight season and have now won 52 straight league matches. The Falcons fall to 3-6 and 0-3.

Simmons dropped just one game in the entire match.

Khoury (5-3 singles, 4-4 doubles) teamed with classmate Rachael Downey (Groveland, Mass.) (4-6 singles, 7-5 doubles) at first doubles to defeat the Albertus Magnus duo of sophomore Zaida Velazco (Dominican Republic), 8-0. Khoury won her fourth straight singles match with a 6-0, 6-0 decision at number three over Kelsea Wildman (Hamden, Conn.). She has lost just one game over her four-match win streak.

First year Han DK Le (Tra Vinh, Vietnam/Matignon H.S. (Mass.)) (7-2 singles, 4-0 doubles) combined with sophomore Cathy Baker (Simsbury, Conn.) (4-0 singles, 6-1 doubles) to take down the Falcons' Wildman and senior Sogona Sacko (New York, N.Y.), 8-0. Le remains undefeated in doubles action with a 4-0 mark and has not lost a singles or doubles match since September 10, while Baker has not suffered defeat since September 3. The pair of sophomore Ashley Pierce (Carver, Mass.) (1-0 singles, 3-0 doubles) and first year Winnie Yee (South San Francisco, Calif.) (1-0 singles, 1-0 doubles) earned an 8-0 showing over the Albertus duo of senior Renita Moore (Manhattan, N.Y.) and first year Shamain McAllister (Irvington, N.J.).

Sophomore Theresa Reinhard Canton, Ohio) (5-7 singles, 6-3 doubles) dropped just one game in a 6-1, 6-0 win for the Sharks over Velazco at first singles, while junior Meg Cokely (Haverhill, Mass.) (9-3 singles, 4-4 doubles) beat Grant at number two singles, 6-0, 6-0. Sophomore Tatiana Yugay (Westborough, Mass.) (2-0 singles, 3-1 doubles) was also a victor for Simmons with a 6-0, 6-0 win at fourth singles over Sacko. First year Mary Matthews (Wakefield, R.I.) (5-0 singles, 2-0 doubles) remains perfect on the season for the Sharks with a 6-0, 6-0 win at number five over Moore. Matthews has lost just three games the entire season in singles action. First year Lilli Blumkin (Del Mar, Calif.) also won without dropping a game for Simmons with a 6-0, 6-0 triumph at sixth singles over McAllister.

The Sharks will be in action again on Monday, October 13 when they host Colby College at Harvard University's Beren Tennis Center in Cambridge, Mass. at 10:00 a.m., while the Falcons head to Newton, Mass. on the same day to take on Mount Ida College at 12:00 p.m.
