Downey Leads Tennis over Anna Maria, 9-0

CAMBRIDGE Mass. ? Junior Rachael Downey (Groveland, Mass.) earned wins at first singles and doubles to lead the Simmons College women?s tennis team to a 9-0 victory over visiting Anna Maria College in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action this afternoon at Harvard University?s Beren Tennis Center in Cambridge, Mass. The Sharks win their fourth straight dual match to improve to 7-2 overall and 4-0 in league play.

CAMBRIDGE Mass. – Junior Rachael Downey (Groveland, Mass.) earned wins at first singles and doubles to lead the Simmons College women's tennis team to a 9-0 victory over visiting Anna Maria College in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action this afternoon at Harvard University's Beren Tennis Center in Cambridge, Mass. The Sharks win their fourth straight dual match to improve to 7-2 overall and 4-0 in league play. Simmons extends their regular-season conference dual match win streak to 50. The AMCATS fall to 1-5 and 0-2. 

Downey combined with classmate Caroline Khoury (Portsmouth, Ohio) to earn an 8-0 doubles victory at number one over the Anna Maria pair of senior Nicola Goudreau (Harrisville, R.I.) and junior Katelyn Edelson (Berlin, Conn.). Later, Downey won in straight sets at first singles over Groudreau, 6-2, 6-1. Khoury was also a double winner on the day, defeating first year Nicole Zamira (Mashpee, Mass.), 6-0, 6-1 at number two singles. Sophomore Cathy Baker (Simsbury, Conn.) was the third double winner for the home team, winning at fourth singles over sophomore Callie Mulcahy (Charlton, Mass.), 6-2, 6-0 and combining with junior Katie Crowley (Reading, Mass.) to win at second doubles, 8-0, over the AMCATS pair of Zamira and Mulcahy. 

First year Han DK Le (Vietnam/Matignon H.S. (Mass.)) triumphed at number three singles, 6-1, 6-0, taking down Edelson. Fellow first years Mary Matthews (Wakefield, R.I.) and Lilli Blumkin (Del Mar, Calif.) also gained victories in singles action for Simmons. Matthews did not drop a game in a 6-0, 6-0 showing at fifth singles against sophomore Marrissa Leonard (Billerica, Mass.) and Blumkin also did not experience defeat in a 6-0, 6-0 triumph at sixth singles over sophomore Jess Palmer (Sutton, Mass.). The sophomore pair of Ashley Pierce (Carver, Mass.) and Tatiana Yugay (Westborough, Mass.) also gained victory in doubles play for the Sharks, blanking Leonard and junior Freya Sprous (Ware, Mass.), 8-0.  

Simmons takes to the courts again on Wednesday, October 1 with a road match in Newton, Mass. at Mount Ida College at 3:00 p.m. Anna Maria returns to action on October 2 when it travels to North Adams, Mass. to face Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts at 3:00 p.m.
