Crowley Wins First Round Consolation Singles Match to Lead Tennis at ITA Regionals

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - Junior Katie Crowley (Reading, Mass.) won her first round consolation singles match to lead the Simmons College women's tennis team on the first day of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association New England Regional Championships hosted by Williams College today in Williamstown, Mass.

Crowley dropped the first set to sophomore Margaret Anne Smith (Spring Lake, N.J.) of Smith College, but rebounded to win the second, 7-5, and the deciding frame, 10-4, for Simmons in a super tie-breaker in the first round of the consolation singles bracket.

Crowley and junior doubles parter Rachael Downey (Groveland, Mass.) were defeated earlier in the day for the Sharks in the round of 32 in doubles action to the Middlebury College sophomore duo of Lily Bondy (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Alexandra Fields (Coral Gables, Fla.), 8-1.

Downey was defeated in the first round of the consolation bracket by Wellesley College freshman Caroline Hsu (Boca Raton, Fla.), 6-1, 6-2.

Sophomore Theresa Reinhard (Canton, Ohio) competed in the singles bracket round of 64 for Simmons and was defeated by senior Emma Chow (Toronto, Ont.) of Bowdoin College, 6-1, 6-1, while Sharks junior Meg Cokely (Haverhill, Mass.) was blanked by Amherst College sophomore Simone Aisiks (New York, N.Y.), 6-0, 6-0.

Crowley will be in action again tomorrow morning at 11:00 a.m. for Simmons.
