Reinhard Leads Tennis over Host Saint Joseph (Conn.), 9-0

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - Sophomore Theresa Reinhard (Canton, Ohio) was a double winner with wins at number one singles and doubles to lead the Simmons College tennis team to a 9-0 victory over host University of Saint Joseph in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference opener this morning in West Hartford, Conn. The Sharks improve to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in league play, while the Blue Jays fall to 2-2 and 0-1.

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - Sophomore Theresa Reinhard (Canton, Ohio) was a double winner with wins at number one singles and doubles to lead the Simmons College tennis team to a 9-0 victory over host Saint Joseph University in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference opener this morning in West Hartford, Conn. The Sharks improve to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in league play, while the Blue Jays fall to 2-2 and 0-1.

Reinhard (2-4 singles, 3-3 doubles) combined with junior Rachael Downey (Groveland, Mass.) (2-3 singles, 3-3 doubles) to cruise to an 8-2 victory at number one doubles over the USJ tandem of sophomore Rebecca Mauri (Meriden, Conn.) and senior Meghan Toth (Naugatuck, Conn.). Reinhard dropped just three games to Mauri in the first set at first singles, before winning all six games for Simmons in the second frame for a 6-0 decision to win the match.

Sophomore Tatiana Yugay (Westborough, Mass.) (1-1 doubles) teamed with junior Katie Crowley (Reading, Mass.) (3-2 singles, 4-2 doubles) to win at second doubles, 8-1, over the Blue Jays' senior Amanda Willhoft (Manchester, Conn.) and Emely Chenard (Meriden, Conn.). The win was the first of Yugay's collegiate career. Sophomore Ashley Pierce (Carver, Mass.) (1-0 doubles) made her season debut, partnering with first year Mary Matthews (Wakfield, R.I.) (2-0 singles, 1-0 doubles) for the Sharks to come back from a 6-4 deficit at third doubles and win the final four games to come away with an 8-6 victory over senior Lisa Wawrzynowski (Newington, Conn.) and sophomore Monica Palmieri (Bristol, Conn.) of Saint Joseph. Matthews also improved to 2-0 in singles action for Simmons with a 6-2, 6-1 triumph over first year Tara Smith (Palmer, Mass.).

Junior Meg Cokely (Haverhill, Mass.) (5-1 singles, 1-4 doubles) did not drop a game in a 6-0, 6-0 win at second singles over Willhoft for the Blue Jays, while classmate Caroline Khoury (Portsmouth, Ohio) (2-3 singles, 1-4 doubles) defeated Wawrzynowski at number three singles, 6-0, 6-0 as well. First year Han DK Le (Vietnam/Matignon H.S. (Mass.)) (4-2 singles) lost just one game in each set to earn a 6-1, 6-1 win at fourth singles over Chenard and sophomore Cathy Baker (Simsbury, Conn.) (1-0 singles, 3-1 doubles) won her first singles contest of the season for the Sharks with a 6-0, 6-0 showing over junior Serena Sundara (Windsor, Conn.).

Simmons returns to the courts on Wednesday, September 17 when Suffolk University hosts it at Buckingham, Browne and Nichols for a 5:30 p.m. match in GNAC play, while Saint Joseph hosts Post University on September 16 at at 4:00 p.m.
