Tennis Defeats Clark, 8-1; Cokely, Crowley and Downey All Double Winners

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Junior Katie Crowley (Reading, Mass.) did not drop a game on the afternoon and won a pair of matches to lead the Simmons College tennis team to an 8-1 victory over Clark University today in Cambridge, Mass. The match was played on the campus of Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The Sharks improve to 3-1 on the season, while the Cougars fall to 0-3.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Junior Katie Crowley (Reading, Mass.) did not drop a game on the afternoon and won a pair of matches to lead the Simmons College tennis team to an 8-1 victory over Clark University today in Cambridge, Mass. The match was played on the campus of Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The Sharks improve to 3-1 on the season, while the Cougars fall to 0-3.

Crowley (3-1 singles, 3-1 doubles) defeated senior Sarah Clay (Ossipee, N.H.) at fourth singles, 6-0, 6-0 to give Simmons a 4-0 lead at the time. She teamed with sophomore Cathy Baker (Simsbury, Conn.) (3-1 doubles) to earn an 8-0 victory in pro-set form over the Clark pair of Misa Mai and Emma Coppes for the Sharks' second individual match win of the day.

Junior Meg Cokely (Haverhill, Mass.) (4-0 singles, 1-3 doubles) extended her singles win streak to four straight with a 6-1, 6-1 decision at number two over the Cougars' junior Rebecca Kravetz (Wayland, Mass.). Cokely combined with classmate Caroline Khoury (Portsmouth, Ohio) (1-2 singles, 1-3 doubles) to take an 8-5 win at first doubles over the Clark duo of first year Isabelle Long (Bellevue, Wash.) and junior Kera Snyder (Portland, Maine). 

Simmons did not drop a game at fifth and sixth singles as first year Han DK Le (Vietnam/Matignon (Mass.)) (3-1 singles) took home a 6-0, 6-0, triumph over Mai at fifth singles and first year Mary Matthews (Wakefield, R.I.) (1-0 singles) earned her first win in her first collegiate match, beating Coppes, 6-0, 6-0 at number six.

Junior Rachael Downey (Groveland, Mass.) (2-2 singles, 2-2 doubles) was impressive at third singles for the Sharks, dropping just one game in a 6-1, 6-0 showing over Snyder. Earlier, she teamed with sophomore Theresa Reinhard (Canton, Ohio) (1-3 singles, 2-2 doubles) to shutout Kravetz and Clay at number two doubles, 8-0.

The Cougars got on the board with the final match of the afternoon, thanks to an individual match win at first singles from Long over Reinhard, 6-4, 6-3.

Simmons returns to the courts on Wednesday, September 10 when it hosts Babson College at 3:30 p.m. in a match to be played at the Beren Tennis Center on the campus of Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass. Clark plays again on the same day, hosting Anna Maria College at 5:00 p.m.
