Simmons Tennis Defeats Smith Pioneers, 8-1

WORCESTER, Mass. -- Simmons Tennis swept the Clark University Cougars, 9-0 Saturday afternoon in non-conference action. With the win, the Sharks improve to 3-1 while the Cougars fall to 1-2.

WINCHESTER, Mass. -- #1 seed Simmons Tennis defeated the #4 seed Anna Maria AMCATS 9-0 in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference semifinal matchup this afternoon at the Winchester Tennis Lawn. The Sharks will play for the GNAC Championship Sunday afternoon at 1:00 PM against #2 Johnson & Wales University.

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. ? Simmons Tennis upended the hosts Smith College Pioneers, 8-1, on Saturday in a non-conference match played at the Indoor Track and Tennis Facility.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. ? Taking the court for the final time in the regular season, Simmons College Tennis fell to the the 13th ranked MIT Engineers just across the Charles River, 9-0.

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – Simmons Tennis upended the hosts Smith College Pioneers, 8-1, on Saturday in a non-conference match played at the Indoor Track and Tennis Facility.

 

Theresa Reinhard (Canton, Ohio) and Sofie Epshtein (Newton, Mass.) defeated Kelli Cheung and Isabelle Eyman while Meghan Cokely (Haverhill, Mass.) and Caroline Khoury (Portsmouth, Ohio) topped Ruth Yi and Melanie Sayarath. The No. 2 and No. 3 flights ended with identical 8-2 scores.

 

Sayarath and Seema Samawi (Damascus, Syria) both won a pair of games in each set as they were felled 6-2, 6-2 by Reinhard and Epshtein, respectively. Yi won two in the first and one in the second as she was upended by Cathy Baker (Simsbury, Conn.), 6-2, 6-1. Both Margaret Teague (Manchester, N.H.) and Cokely added 6-0, 6-1 wins over Cheung and Eyman.

 

Margaret Anne Smith ended the match with a victory at No. 5 singles for the second time in as many days with a 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (10-8) triumph over Rachael Downey (Groveland, Mass.). Smith and Seema Samawi teamed up at No. 1 doubles and had the best result of the three flights as they fell 4-8 to Downey and Teague. 

 

The Pioneers (3-12) hit the road next Saturday for a 3:00 p.m. match at Connecticut College in New London. Simmons (13-2) heads to Division I Holy Cross for a 3:30 p.m. contest on Friday.
