Scholand, Manjikian Lead Swimming & Diving in 165-135 Loss at Wellesley

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Junior Aine Scholand (Albuquerque, N.M.) won all three events she entered and sophomore Sara Manjikian (Belmont, Mass.) won both diving events to lead the Simmons University swimming & diving team in a 165-135 loss to host Wellesley College this afternoon at Chandler Pool in Wellesley, Mass. The Sharks fall to 6-2 on the season, while the Blue improve to 2-0.

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Junior Aine Scholand (Albuquerque, N.M.) won all three events she entered and sophomore Sara Manjikian (Belmont, Mass.) won both diving events to lead the Simmons University swimming & diving team in a 165-135 loss to host Wellesley College this afternoon at Chandler Pool in Wellesley, Mass. The Sharks fall to 6-2 on the season, while the Blue improve to 2-0.

Scholand won the 1000 and 500-yard freestyle events in addition to a victory in the 100-yard backstroke, while Manjikian tallied the highest scores on both the one and three-meter boards as part eight winning events for Simmons. Senior Jason Erichsen (Banks, Ore.) was the victor in both the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke events, while senior Kerry Fleming (Northampton, Mass.) earned a win in the 200-yard backstroke.

First year Jessica Wegner (Taipei, Taiwan) earned three individual victories on the afternoon, including a tie for first place (25.84) in the 50-yard freestyle with teammate Margaret Harrigan (Chatham, N.J.) and a first place time in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:15.15 and a win in the 100-yard butterfly. First year Hannah May (Cincinnati, Ohio) also added wins in the 100 and 200-yard freestyle during the meet. May and Wang took the top two spots in the 100-yard freestyle, with May finishing just ahead of her teammate's time of 55.54 with a mark of 55.50. In the 200-yard freestyle, May edged out Fleming by just over half a second at 1:59.48. Wellesley also got a 1-2 finish in the 200 Fly, as senior Jessie Feng (Princeton, N.J.) and Haley finished with times of 2:17.91 and 2:21.27, respectively.

Scholand won the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:21.60 with senior Laura Simpson (Perkiomenville, Pa.) right behind at 5:26.31 to give the Sharks a 1-2 finish in the 12th event of the day to pull them to within 115-111. Wellesley countered in the next event, earning a 1-2 finish in the 100-yard butterfly behind a first place time of 59.02 from Wegner and a runner-up time of 1:00.17 from junior Maggie Haley (Shady Side, Md.) and took a 130-115 advantage. Manjikian won the three-meter board by nearly 35 points with a mark of 223.25 and Simmons closed to within 137-127, but it was as close it would get. Wegner and classmate Shelby Ripp (St. Louis, Mo.) finished 1-2 in the 200-yard individual medley as Ripp recorded a time of 2:16.61 for the Blue. Wellesley closed out the meet with a win in the 400-yard freestyle relay, despite a furious final push by Fleming for the Sharks. Junior Danielle Peterson (Livingston, N.J.), Harrigan, and first years Peyton Wang (Palo Alto, Calif.), and Hannah May (Cincinnati, Ohio) finished with the top time of 3:41.67 to clinch the 165-135 Wellesley win. Fleming made up more than a second and a half, but Simmons fell just short at 3:42.38.

Wang, Peterson, Wegner, and Harrigan opened the meet with a Wellesley victory in the 200-yard medley relay, finishing with a time of 1:53.10 to best the top Simmons time of 1:55.97 from Erichsen, sophomore Elizabeth Bartlett (Richmond, Mass.), first year Sarah Singleton (Mission Hills, Calif.) and Fleming. Scholand and Simpson also finished first and second, respectively, in the 1000-yard freestyle with times of 11:02.40 and 11:08.51 to cut the Blue margin to 19-17. May's win in the 200-yard freestyle was followed by a victory in the 100-yard backstroke on Scholand's time of 1:02.47. Erichsen's time of 1:10.94 bested all in the 100-yard breaststroke and helped the Sharks move to within 48-45 after five events.

Wellesley won three of the next four events, including wins in the 200-yard butterfly, the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard freestyle, while Manjikian's total of 222.40 points topped the three-meter board field by nearly 20 points for the Sharks and the home team sat with a 104-84 cushion. Simmons won the next three events, including Fleming's time of 2:11.49 in the 200-yard backstroke, Erichsen's first-place mark of 2:33.88 in the 200-yard breaststroke and Scholand and Simpson's 1-2 finish in the 500-yard freestyle.

The Sharks return to the pool on Saturday, November 17 when they host University of New England at 1:00 p.m., while the Blue host Mount Holyoke College at 1:00 p.m.
