Scholand Leads Swimming & Diving at WPI Invitational; Sharks Defeat Brandeis, Babson, Smith

WORCESTER, Mass. -- Junior Aine Scholand (Albuquerque, N.M.) won all three individual events she entered to lead the Simmons University women's swimming & diving team to three wins at the WPI Invitational this evening at the WPI Sports and Recreation Center on the campus of Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, Mass. The Sharks earned dual meet victories over Brandeis University (159.5-134.5), Smith College (212.5-87.5) and Babson College (232-62), but were defeated by host WPI (165-135). Simmons improves to 6-1 on the season.

The Sharks earned dual meet victories over Brandeis University (159.5-134.5), Smith College (212.5-87.5) and Babson College (232-62), but were defeated by host WPI (165-135). Simmons improves to 6-1 on the season.

The Sharks won a meet-high eight events over all four teams, including seven individual events and the 200-yard freestyle relay to close out the evening.

Simmons led both Babson and Smith from start to finish, but did not pull ahead of Brandeis until the ninth event of the meet when junior Laura List (Bedford, Mass.) won the 100-yard freestyle over all four teams with a time of 55.63. The Sharks never looked back the rest of the way. The closest margin Simmons compiled against host WPI was a 29-26 deficit following three events, two of which the Sharks won.

Scholand began her night by winning the 1000-yard freestyle by over 21 seconds with a time of 10:46.28 for Simmons, before adding a first-place showing in the 200-yard freestyle with a mark of 1:59.95. The junior tacked on a 10-plus second win in the 500-yard freestyle on a time of 5:17.26, before helping the Sharks win the 200-yard freestyle relay.  List swam the opening leg, followed by senior Laura Simpson (Perkiomenville, Pa.), sophomore Olivia Walz (Natick, Mass.) and the anchor by Scholand. 

First year Sarah Singleton (Mission Hills, Calif.) joined Scholand as a multiple winner for Simmons, touching the wall first in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:14.83 and later added a win in the 100-yard butterfly with a mark of 1:00.53. Senior Jason Erichsen (Banks, Ore.) scored an individual victory in the 200-yard breaststroke after turning in a time of 2:33.91. Erichsen was also the top finisher for the Sharks in the 400-yard individual medley, finishing second to Brandeis' Claire Xu by just four one-hundreths of a second with a time of 4:53.32 and placed third overall in the 100-yard backstroke with a mark of 1:03.70, which topped both Babson and Smith. List finished second for Simmons in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.80 to WPI's Katherine Pawlak (24.93). Simpson placed third in the 1000-yard freestyle for the Sharks, but her time of 11:20.18 topped all swimmers from Brandeis, Babson and Smith. Sophomore diver Sara Manjikian (Belmont, Mass.) tallied 196.85 points to finish second on the one meter board and was Simmons top scorer on the three-meter board with a total of 172.30 to finish fourth overall. 

The Sharks return to the water on Saturday, November 10 when they travel to Wellesley, Mass. to take on Wellesley College for a 1:00 p.m. meet.
