INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Simmons College sophomore swimmer Aine Scholand (Albuquerque, N.M.) placed second in the 1650-yard freestyle this evening at the NCAA Women's Swimming & Diving Championships at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania Natatorium in Indianapolis, Ind. The second-year student-athlete is the first swimmer in school history to earn First Team All-America accolades.

Emory University won its ninth straight national title and 11th overall with 603 points, while the Sharks finished in 26th place with 23 points in their first-ever appearance in the championship meet.

Scholand turned in a time of 16:51.01 to shatter her own school record by exactly four and a half seconds and finish second behind Williams College first year Laura Westphal's champion mark of 16:35.20. Her time was more than six seconds faster than third place finisher Kendall Vanderhoof from Kenyon College.

Scholand owned the lead in the race after the first 500 yards with a time of 5:01.38 and maintained her second place position for the final 1000-plus yards of the race, including a final 100-yard split of 1:01.33, which was her fifth-fastest split of the race. 

The NCAA Championships cap a season for Simmons that saw the team finish its dual meet season with an 11-2 overall record to register double-digit wins for the fifth straight season in addition to winning its first-ever New England Intercollegiate Swimming & Diving Association Championship in February and its 14th straight Great Northeast Athletic Conference title in December. Scholand was named the Swimmer of the Meet following the NEISDA Championship and Head Coach Mindy Williams was tabbed the NEISDA Coach of the Year.
