Swisher Named GNAC Women's Swimming & Diving Swimmer of the Week

WINTHROP, Mass. ? Simmons College women?s swimmer Miriam Swisher (Alburquerque, N.M.) was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Women?s Swimming Athlete of the Week, it was announced today by the conference. The honor marks the second straight week that a Simmons swimmer has been selected for the award. Hillary Wong (Quincy, Mass.) received the distinction last week for the Sharks. Swisher earned the accolade three times last year.

WINTHROP, Mass. ? Simmons College swimmer Miriam Swisher (Albuquerque, N.M.) was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Women?s Swimming & Diving Athlete of the Week for the week of January 26-Februray 1, it was announced today by the league. 

WINTHROP, Mass. ? Simmons College?s Miriam Swisher (Albuquerque, N.M.) was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Women's Swimming & Diving Athlete of the Week for the week of February 23 to March 1, it was announced today by the league.

WINTHROP, Mass. – Simmons College women's swimmer Miriam Swisher (Alburquerque, N.M.) was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Women's Swimming Athlete of the Week, it was announced today by the conference. The honor marks the second straight week that a Simmons swimmer has been selected for the award. Hillary Wong (Quincy, Mass.) received the distinction last week for the Sharks. Swisher earned the accolade three times last year. 

The sophomore led all swimmers with 27 points in a double-dual meet between Simmons and visiting Gordon College and Elms College, by virtue of winning three individual events, on November 1. The Sharks defeated Gordon, 159.5-91.5, and downed Elms, 188-61. Swisher won the 50-yard backstroke with a time of 28.68 as well as the 100-yard backstroke with a season-best mark of 1:01.93 and added a first-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle, touching the wall with a season-best 24.99. A graduate of La Cueva High School, she also anchored the Sharks winning 200-yard freestyle relay and led it to a time of 1:44.92. 

Swisher has enjoyed an outstanding second campaign with Simmons, winning all five individual events she has entered this year, including the 100 back and 50 free twice each and the 50 back last week at Westfield State University with a personal-record time of 28.50. She was also a part of a pair of winning relays, having competed in this week's 200 free relay and last week's 200 medley relay. 

The second year swimmer turned in a phenomenal rookie season in 2013-14, setting five individual school records in the 50, 100 and 200 free as well as the 50 and 100 back events in addition to being a member of school-record setting 200, 400 and 800 free relay as well as 200 and 400 medley relay squads. Swisher won the GNAC Championship last year in the 50, 100 and 200 free in addition to the 100 back and helped the Sharks take the GNAC title in the 200 free and 400 medley relay events. She also finished second in the New England Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Association (NEISDA) Championships in the 50, 100 and 200 free events last year and helped the Simmons 800 free relay team win the event. 

The Sharks are currently 3-0 on the season and will swim again on Saturday, November 8 when they head to Biddeford, Maine to take on University of New England at 1:00 p.m.
