Soccer Edged at Wellesley, 1-0; Hayes Makes Five Saves

WELLESLEY, Mass. - The Wellesley College soccer team scored just 2:47 into the second half for the only goal of the match to edge visiting Simmons College this afternoon in Wellesley, Mass in the Soccer Without Borders Classic. The Sharks unbeaten streak ends at three as they fall to 1-1-2 on the season, while the Blue improve to 2-1-0.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Springfield College women's soccer team defeated visiting Simmons College, 3-0, this evening in Springfield, Mass. to end the Sharks' three-match win streak. Simmons falls to 9-7-2 on the season in its regular-season finale , while the Pride extend their unbeaten streak to eight straight games and improve to 10-3-3. It was just the second shutout loss of the season for the Sharks.

Abigail Hess (Claremont, Calif.) made the most of a free kick in the 48th minute, sending the ball high into the upper corner of the net from 20-yards out. It was the first goal of the season for the junior, giving Wellesley a 1-0 lead it would not relinquish.

The hosts finished the contest with a 12-1 advantage in shots. Simmons sophomore keeper Briana Hayes (Manorville, N.Y.) kept the Sharks in the game, making five saves, while Wellesley senior goalie Claire Cerda (Coral Gables, Fla.) went untested in the shutout win.

After Wellesley's 48th-minute goal, Hayes needed to make three more saves to keep the Blue from increasing its lead. Junior midfieler Darlene Dang (Danville, Calif.), Hess, and freshman forward Melise Knowles (Diablo, Calif.) each recorded shots on goal in the second.

The lone shot from Simmons came in the 86th-minute, when junior forward Greer Gilbert (Falmouth, Mass.) launched a strike that went high of the net.

In the other Soccer Without Borders Classic game today, Babson College topped Bard College, 2-0, in a game played at Babson. Tomorrow's games kick off at 1:30pm with the Sharks heading to Babson Park, Mass. to play Babson, while Wellesley takes on Bard at home..
