Soccer Names Hayes and Russo Co-Captains for 2014

BOSTON, Mass. - Briana Hayes (Manorville, N.Y.) and Victoria Russo (Braintree, Mass.) have been named Co-Captains for the Simmons College soccer team for the 2014 season it was announced by Head Coach Erica Schuling.

BOSTON, Mass. - Briana Hayes (Manorville, N.Y.) and Victoria Russo (Braintree, Mass.) have been named Co-Captains for the Simmons College soccer team for the 2014 season it was announced by Head Coach Erica Schuling.

Hayes has been a two-year starter in net for the Sharks and ranked 14th in the nation with a sterling .882 save percentage last season. The Eastport-South Manor High School product also posted a 1.20 goals against average, including 13 outings where she allowed one or fewer goals and earned Great Northeast Athletic Conference First Team honors.  In addition, the physical therapy major recorded four shutouts to match her career high.  Hayes started all 20 matches for Simmons last year over 1793 minutes. The junior netminder also stopped 179 shots and posted double-digit save marks in nine contests, including a career-high of 20 on two occasions.

Russo has been an inspirational leader to her teammates, having missed the 2012 season due to surgery and all of last year because of torn anterior cruciate ligament in her knee. The junior is well-respected by her teammates and worked extremely hard to recover from her knee injury. A player with great instincts for the game, who has shown tremendous leadership on and off the field, she has a clean bill of health with an eye on a starting spot in the Sharks' midfield.

Simmons finished with an 8-11-1 overall record in 2013 and advanced to the GNAC Tournament semifinals.
