Berkman Lifts Sharks Over Wildcats, 2-1 in Overtime

BOSTON, Mass. -- Simmons Soccer fell to the Emmanuel College Saints, 2-1 in a hard fought Great Northeast Athletic Conference battle Saturday afternoon. The Fenway neighbors were evenly matched, each with 12 saves and 30-25 Simmons shot advantage.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. ? The Johnson & Wales University women?s soccer team dropped a hard fought 2-1 overtime decision against Simmons in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Outdoor Athletic Conference contest on Sunday afternoon.

BOSTON, Mass. -- Simmons Soccer fell to the vising Springfield College Pride, 2-1 Tuesday evening to wrap up the Sharks regular season schedule. Springfield moves to 10-4-2 overall with the win, while the Sharks fall to 8-10.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales University women's soccer team dropped a hard fought 2-1 overtime decision against Simmons in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Outdoor Athletic Conference contest on Sunday afternoon.

 

The two teams had back and forth action throughout the first half with both teams having solid scoring chances.  Neither could capitalize, however as the game headed into halftime in a scoreless tie with both teams having five shots on goal.

 

Simmons was able to get on the board first when senior Kristyn Heuslein (Manchester, N.H.)blasted in a shot from the top of the box that deflected off the far post an into the corner of the net to put the Sharks up 1- 0 at the 54:34 mark.  After Simmons was whistled for a foul near midfield, JWU senior Sam Adams (Denver, Colo.) sent a crossing pass into the Simmons box.  Freshman Sara Kate Matthews (Northborough, Mass.) then chipped a shot into the right corner of the net to tie the game at 1-1 in the 84th minute.  Regulation ended deadlocked at 1-1.

 

Simmons got the game-winner just :39 seconds into overtime when sophomore Ali Berkman (Natick, Mass.) blasted in a shot from 30 yards out to give the Sharks the 2-1 victory.

 

Sophomore Cassie Collins (Oswego, N.Y.) tallied five saves for Johnson & Wales while sophomoreBriana Hayes (Manorville, N.Y.) made eight stops for Simmons.

 

With the loss Johnson & Wales falls to 4-6-2 for the season and 2-2-1 in the GNAC while Simmons improves to 6-5 on the season and 3-2 in league play. The Wildcats will return to action onWednesday, October 9th when they travel to Suffolk for a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest at 6:00 p.m.
