BOSTON, Mass. -- Simmons Soccer fell to the Emmanuel College Saints, 2-1 in a hard fought Great Northeast Athletic Conference battle Saturday afternoon. The Fenway neighbors were evenly matched, each with 12 saves and 30-25 Simmons shot advantage.

The Saints (4-5-2, 2-0-1 GNAC) struck first after 25 minutes of quality opportunities by both teams when Maggie Carey collected a cross ball from Courtney Freadman and beat Sharks keeper Briana Hayes (Manorville, N.Y.) on the low right side.  Earlier in the half, Hayes made a huge stop on Lindsey Garvey on a point blank shot.

With 15 minutes remaining, Hayes came out of the net to the 25-yard line to force Garvey to shoot wide. With less two minutes to play in the half, Simmons senior Kristyn Heuslein (Manchester, N.H.) hit the crossbar on a free kick but the Saints were able to clear the zone and enter halftime up 1-0.

Ten minutes into the second half, Heuslein had her second free kick and this time, floated the ball over the head of Saints goalkeeper Abaigeal Thivierge to knot the score at one. The Sharks kept up the pressure with shots by Desh Perera (Reading, Mass.), Ali Berkman (Natick, Mass.) and Greer Gilbert (Falmouth, Mass.) but the Saints defense denied a score.

Emmanuel took the lead with 10 minutes remaining in the game when Garvey broke through the Sharks defense to deflect a pass from Darcey Sullivan. The Sharks posted four more shots in the closing minutes but were unable to convert.

The Sharks (4-5, 0-2 GNAC) return to GNAC action on Wednesday, Oct. 2 at Norwich University at 7:00 PM.
