Maiewski Leads Lacrosse Past Regis, 14-10

WESTON, Mass. - Sophomore attacker Missie Maiewski (Northampton, Mass.) netted a career-high five goals to lead the Simmons College women's lacrosse team to a 14-10 victory over host Regis College this afternoon at Regis Stadium in Weston, Mass. The Sharks improve to 5-6 on the season, while the Pride fall to 9-2.

WESTON, Mass. - Sophomore attacker Missie Maiewski (Northampton, Mass.) netted a career-high five goals to lead the Simmons College women's lacrosse team to a 14-10 victory over host Regis College this afternoon at Regis Stadium in Weston, Mass. The Sharks improve to 5-6 on the season, while the Pride fall to 9-2.

Simmons owned a decided advantage on the draw, winning 17 of 26 opportunities and was extremely efficient on the clear with 15 of 19 successful efforts.

Maiewski was one of three Sharks with three or more goals, combining with classmates Ana Giarrusso (Hingham, Mass.) (four) and Mallory Cottam (Hope, R.I.) (three) to net 12 of the team's 14 scores. Maiewski also picked up a ground ball and caused a turnover, while Giarrusso came up with a match-high five ground balls, won four draws and caused three turnovers. Cottam added a ground ball and a draw control to her day. Sophomore midfielder Elena Bragg (Belmont, Mass.) was a big reason for the team's prowess on the draw, winning a school-record 12 draw controls in addition to scoring a goal, picking up a pair of ground balls and causing a turnover.

Junior Chyenne Yeager (Indiana, Pa.) picked up her second win in as many days with 10 saves for Simmons.

First year attacker Kerri Anselmo (Natick, Mass.) led the way with four goals and an assist for Regis, while junior attacker Nicole Roche (Waltham, Mass.) scored three goals and won four draws. First year defender Maddy Rodriguez (Amherst, Mass.) and senior defender Rachel Baldrate (Plymouth, Mass.) each caused three turnovers and combined for seven ground balls to lead the Pride defense. Junior goalie Maresa Malcolm (Barrington, N.J.) stopped seven shots in the loss.

Roche converted a feed from first year midfielder Brooke Ross (Hanover, Mass.) to pull the home team to within 11-10 with 8:27 remaining in the match. The Sharks responded by closing out the contest with three unanswered goals, including two from Maiewski, to come away with the victory. 

Simmons scored three of the first four goals to open the match with Giarrusso finding the back of the net twice, before Bragg gave the visitors a 3-1 lead with 23:07 left in the first half. Anselmo and Roche each scored to knot the contest at 3-3 for the Pride. The Sharks tallied three of the final four goals of the period, including a marker from Maiewski with 89 seconds left in the half to give them a 6-4 margin at the intermission.

Regis scored the first two goals of the second stanza, behind goals from sophomore attacker Emily Kosak (Milton, Mass.) and junior middie Linsay Bumila (Raynham, Mass.) to re-tie the match at 6-6 with 25:45 showing in the period.

The teams traded a pair of goals each to keep the score tied at eight-apiece with 19:19 left to play. Maiewski and junior attacker Kasey Fries (Bridgewater, Mass.) scored three of the game's next three goals for Simmons to give it an 11-9 lead with 10:57 remaining in the contest.
